Advantages: easy to use

Disadvantages: sales calls

It's car insurance renewal time and although my current insurers had offered me a reasonable deal I was sure I could save money on my quote.

One of the quickest way of comparing prices is to go through a company like moneyinsurance.com, a price comparison site. It compares prices on a range of services inclusing car and home insurance, mobile phones and broadband but I have only used it to compare car insurance prices.

The site is well laid out and easy to navigate. Once you have selected the car insurance option you then fill in all the usual details about you and your car and then click for a quote. So far so good.

A few minutes later you are given a list of quotes. I was at first amazed at the cheapness of the lowest few quotes which were also a lot cheaper than I had found on the other comparison sites I had used. This part is well set out and each premium quoted has a run down of the quote including monthly payment plans. I like paying over 12 months so this is a good option but as each company charges a different APR it can make a difference to total price paid and this information was not available. I would like to see a total for paying direct debit and not have to get my calculator out.

Now that I had my quote, it was time to take out a policy so I clicked through to my chosen insurer only to find the price was actually around £100 more than quoted on moneysupermarket. Starting to feel my blood pressure increase I click onto the second quote only to find something similar.

Then I went back to confused.com and took out a policy via there site which was actually the same as the quoted price.

The next thing to annoy me was the sales calls. About an hour after I used this blasted site I had a call from moneysupermarket.com asking me if I still needed insurance. I hate sales calls, so rude and make a point of never dealing with a company who invades my space and time by phoning me up and flogging me something. Next came the calls from the individual insurers noticing I had asked for a quote and peddling insurance to me.

Overall I wish I had never used this site. On the surface it offered the best deal but when you looked deeper the prices quoted were not the real prices you would pay. I dont know if this is a ploy used by the site or the insurers themselves but it kind of defeats the object of the site. Add to it the sales calls and by clicking on this site you are just setting yourself up to be annoyed.

I did get cheaper insurance in the end but not thanks to this site.

Summary: Not what it seems
