Advantages: great prices and good range of vehicles

Disadvantages: may need to be flexible on the vehicle and spec that you want

Motorpoint car supermarket has four sites around the UK. Derby is the main HQ with, I was told about 2,000 cars in stock. They also have sites in Glasgow, Burnley and Newport (Wales) and you can also log onto www.motorpoint.co.uk or call their telesales team. The company has a vast array of vehicles from City Rovers for £4k to Landrovers and other prestige Marques at £35k. the showrooms are 'supermarket' style, basic but well organised and anyone expecting the same luxury feel as a dealership will be in for a surprise! They only sell cars which are new or a maximum of 18 months old and sell UK and parallel imports from Europe. This is why they can offer the savings that they do, because they buy in bulk from abroad at lower prices thus undercutting UK dealerships.

I went to www.motorpoint.co.uk after checking out target prices in What Car? magazine and then approaching a main dealer. Unfortunately the main dealer couldn't match my price so I decided to look elsewhere. After doing a bit of internet research I found several ‘car supermarket' sites and compared prices on the model that I was interested in - a VW Golf 2.0 GT TDI 5dr. I later rang Motorpoint's customer call centre and it turned out that I would save over £2k on the price that I was quoted at the dealership, they also had the car that I wanted in stock .

With this in mind I arranged to travel down to Derby to view the car. The spec was great and as a parallel import from Germany everything was as you'd expect from a UK vehicle. I placed a deposit there and then.

Ask the right questions up front, make sure you know what you are getting and that you've carefully done your homework. The thing about car supermarkets is that you do save a lot of money, but you should be aware that for that reason you need to know exactly what you are getting and ask all the right questions.

I will definitely go back to Motorpoint again, I’ve saved myself £2k by doing my homework and shopping around.

Summary: best prices i could find

I found the sales people were very indifferent, and couldn't find the cars that were supposed to be in the Derby site (according to their website). As to answering questions I found the 3 month guarantee offered by motorpoint very off-putting, particularly since it was a new vehicle that we were looking for.

Shop around plently, sometimes dealers have cars on offer that give 2k or more savings.

Hi Crispy,
I'd say in you need to know the full background behind behind the vehicle you are intersted in, so this includes...
1. Is it new?
2. Is it the latest edition / style?
3. When was it manufactured and where is it sourced from?
4. What does it come with and what is it lacking compared to a standard UK vehicle?
5. What 'extras' are compulsory and which aren't (e.g. the valet isn't)

Hope this helps?

Hi,I've just posted a review and I agree with what you say about asking the right questions. I think it is important that you mention this and know what you are getting before you buy. I thought this would be obvious though as buying a car is such an expensive purchasing decision.
As regards to the depreciation on the car, a good way of getting around this is by taking the car on their 3x3 package that way you can exchange it or hand back at the end of the period.Ben
