Advantages: Cheap, wide selection, not pushy sales
Disadvantages: warrenty may not be valid, mediocre service, Check all paerwork and claims
Motorpoint have three sites in Derby, Burnley and Manchester. I visited the Derby site where they stock over 2,000 cars and sell around 400 per week. They have from small family cars from £7k to £40k BMWs. They specailise in new imported cars which they sell on new with UK specification. They also sell nearly new second hand cars, one of which I bought They advertise their cas on the internet and they claim a fair proportion of their customers buy over theinternet without seeing the cars. You pay a £300 deposit which is a commitment to buy. When you turn up at the site you can wander around and the sales person explains their process without pressuring. Once you have seen cars you are interested in you go to the central desk to obtain their keys. Once you have these no one else can buy the cars, and with over 100 bee sold at the weekend that is a great way of taking the pressure off you whilst you take a considered look around. At this stage there is no sales person around to pressure you, but they are on hand to be called in. Once you decide to buy they take your through the paper work. So far 10/10 for sales being helpfull and not pushy. Whilst the paperwork is been signed they do try to sell extras such as breakdwon cover, audio systems. This is a littel pushy, but having said that they did offer a reversing alarm which I would not othjerwise have considered, and which I bought and am glad I did. The cars are not prepared in any way i.e. as their previous owners left them so can be a little untidey. For £60 they are valetted before you take delivery. The valet was OK but could have been better with more care taken removing some marks on upholstery. After the Pre Delivery Inspection and valeting I picked up the car a few days later, which gave me time to arrange insurance. This is where I hit a problem. Their adverts claim all cars have a manufacturer's warenty, but the car I bought was 18 months old and had not had a 12 month service, bu
t was below the 20,000 alternative service point. I guess this was because if was registered in November but not delivered to its previous company owner for 3 months , then when sold onto Mototrpoint had sat on their forecourt for a few months. I told Motorpoint I was not happy about this and they offered to phone Vauxhall who confirmed they may view this as not adhering to the warrently conditions and so possibly invalidating a claim if I made one. After pressing Motorpoint did offer one of their own warrenties for 12 months free. So, they did do something to rectify the situation, but they should have checked the service status, for as well as the web site claiming, the sales person also said it was serviced. So, ask to see any documation before you buy or commit to a return trip to pick the car up. Since then I am happy with the car which is about 20% cheper than the equivlent in my local second hand dealer i.e. £8k vs £10k and overall worth the hassle and poor service. So, look on the web until you see something you like and then dash down to see the car. Give it a good look over and bear in mind the valet will tidy it up but any marks will remian. Don't be succoured into buying extras you don't want, or could get cheaper elsewhere. And check all paerpwork e.g. service history before you commit to buy.
