Advantages: Great fun, easy to navigate, quick to load

Disadvantages: Too many entries to look at

A few weeks ago I heard someone talking about about movie mistakes that they had noticed and it got me thinking about the people who are responsible for continuity on films – they don’t seem to be doing a very good job do they? Have a look at some of the examples below and see if you could have done any better for the amount of money they must be paid.

www.movie-mistake.com was ‘invented’ by Jon Sandys a few years ago and it started as a hobby. He now works on it full time, having graduated from Southampton University in July 2000. He is age 23 and has a massive collection of DVDs/videos (not surprisingly). The site loads quickly and it nice and easy on the eye, being mainly blue and white. There are a few adverts for DVDs, posters and domain names, but nothing too overwhelming. On the left of each screen is a list of links to other areas of the site, making it very easy to navigate.

•• ALL FILMS ••
This is a grid of the letters of the alphabet, which you click on to go to a list of films beginning with that letter. You can also search by actor, actress or director. There is a link to sign up for the movie-mistakes newsletter or group. I looked for Grease and found it had 28 mistakes.

> GREASE - In the soda shop, the waitress turns off the lights with her elbow because her hands are full, but she misses the light switch by 6 inches.

•• TOP FILMS ••
This lists the worst (i.e. with the most mistakes) 20 films. Simply click on the film title and it will take you to the full list. The top 5 are currently:

• The Matrix – 146 mistakes
• Titanic – 136 mistakes
• The Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring – 111 mistakes
• Gladiator – 96 mistakes
• Jurassic Park – 95 mistakes

> THE LORD OF THE RINGS - When Saruman and Gandalf are fighting in I
sengard (Orthanc), Saruman is pushed to the wall. When he "crashes" to the wall, you can see the black, short hair of the stuntman losing the white hair of Saruman.

•• UPDATES ••
This page shows a list of films that have been updated this week with more mistakes. It shows the number of new mistakes this week and the total number of mistakes. Spider Man has 61 new mistakes this week and the A Beautiful Mind has 1.

> THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS - Margot's wooden finger is only there when people are talking about it. In most scenes, she has all her fingers intact, most noticeably when she smokes.

•• THE BEST ••
There is a vote button on all mistakes on the site and the results are turned into this top 20 best mistakes as voted by the readers of the site. Number 1 is from Star Wars and number 2 is from The Lord of the Rings and is why this opinion has the title it does.

> THE LORD OF THE RINGS - In the scene where Sam and Frodo are in the field with the scarecrow, you can plainly see a car cruising past in the distance, from right to left.

•• QUESTIONS ••
This page details answers to Frequently Asked Questions such as ‘Are you just trying to undermine the film industry?’. It gives more details about the owner of the site and how it works.

> GLADIATOR - In the battle with the Barbarian Horde one of the chariots is turned over. Once the dust settles you can see a gas cylinder in the back of the chariot.

•• GUESTBOOK ••
This is currently deactivated while the owner looks for a better one. I can imagine some heavy conversations about hotly disputed mistakes on this page in the future.

> TITANIC - When the ship is sinking, and Rose and Jack are running through the inside of the ship, you can blatantly see cameras and crew outside the window.

•̶
6; CHARTS ••
This page lists the current top 10 US and UK films and videos. You can click on any film and it will take you to the mistakes logged for it. It’s a shame we are always behind America with releases.

> A BEAUTIFUL MIND - In the end, when Crowe gets standing ovations from the Nobel-prize audience, you can clearly see that the name Nobel is spelled wrong on the platform which he stands behind.

•• LINKS ••
This page takes you to some movie links (such as ‘Golden Raspberries’) and other stuff (such as ‘Insomniac Mania’)

> OCEAN’S ELEVEN - When the acrobatic guy gets his hand jammed in the door of the van (when they are getting the pinch) its one hand, and then when he is having it bandaged, it's the other hand.

•• CONTRIBUTE ••
This is a page written by the site owner explaining how to contribute and what he likes and dislikes, e.g. you must have seen the mistake yourself and the entry must be spell checked. There is also a huge backlog at the moment, so if you submit a mistake, it will be a number of weeks before it appears. Once you have read all the do’s and don’ts, there is a link at the bottom to submit your mistake.

> MOULIN ROUGE - The scar on the Duke's bodyguard's face switches from one cheek to the other throughout the movie.

•• HOME ••
Back to the home page, which includes recent news such as the fact that the site owner has recently been appearing on the Big Breakfast with these mistakes. The home page also details the current number of mistakes (13664) and movies (1866).

> MONSTERS INC. - When sully and Mike go back to work to take Boo back to her home, the clock on the wall as they enter says 8:50, a few minutes later boo takes off and Mike and Sully go after her, a few minutes later Randell catches Mike and points
to the clock which now reads 11:55 and says he has 5 hours to bring Boo back to him. The chase only lasted a few minutes!

This is one of those sites that is worth saving as a favourite, as it is great fun and constantly updated. Personally I don’t notice mistakes in movies as I am not very observant, but I will certainly check out the site for mistakes on films I have bought on video/DVD. Somewhere on the site I read about a book being published soon detailing the mistakes on the site, which may be a good present for movie fans. I’d be interested to know if anyone has submitted any entries.

I’ve found another way to waste time on the internet – oh no!

Ooh, I'm off ....

My Dad seems to catch these 'glips' as he calls them in almost every movie he watches. Although he caught several in Titanic, he missed the one you mentioned. I wonder, is it worth having to sit through it again just to beat him at his own game??

Thanx

Lisa :)
