Advantages: Straightforward procedure, good way to make a little cash

Disadvantages: Low prices paid

Having read a few reviews of the musicmagpie website, I thought I would give it a go. This is a website where you can sell your CDs and also computer games. I had lots of CDs that I did not play any more, and I needed to make some space on my shelf. My tastes in music have changed quite a bit in the last few years so I couldn't see the point of hanging onto stuff when I didn't want to listen to it. Normally I just take my old CDs to the charity shop, as there aren't many places where you can sell CDs unless you want the hassle of sellng on eBay and I couldn't be bothered with that. But as I discovered from other members of Dooyoo, the musicmagpie site will give you a cheque payment for your old CDs and even though the amount of money may not be very big it is still better than nothing.

I had a look around the website and registered as a member. Next I had to key in the barcodes from the backs of my CDs in order to get a price for them. Some CDs were not recognised by the site's database, while others were obviously in too plentiful supply as the webpage told me they did not want them at that time. For the rest of my CDs I was offered anywhere between 25p and £2 each. I didn't bother selling the 25p ones, but I accepted the sites offer for a total of 11 other CDs. The amount they offered me was just under £11, so on average that was nearly a pound for each CD that I sold. I agreed to this price and they sent me an email to confirm our deal.

The next step was that about a week later musicmagpie sent me freepost envelopes to send them my CDs in. They don't pay you until they have received and checked your CDs, so at this point you have to trust them to keep their end of the bargain! I posted the CDs as instructed and about 3 weeks afterwards I got my cheque payment.

I found musicmagpie easy to use and based on my personal experience I would use them again. I had no problems obtaining my payment although the whole process takes a while to complete. The price you get for your CDs isn't huge, but it's more than you get if you just give them away. My view is that even if I just made £11, that's enough to buy another CD with, and I have cleared some shelf space too.

Summary: Better to get a few pounds for your old CDs than to have them sit on a shelf, never to be played.
