Advantages: Easy to do, postage paid and cheques received no problem
Disadvantages: Very low amount per disc....average 25p
I am a big fan of trying to make a little extra money in my spare time and also love to have a good old clear out. I hate clutter and will grasp at any opportunity to get rid of unwanted items, especially if I can make some money doing so.
When I stumble across music magpie while online one day I thought this was an ideal opportunity to sell my old cds. I had lots of cds from when I used to buy them as a teenager. None of them I would ever listen to again.......Westlife, Steps, Geri Halliwell, the collection was really bad. In fact I had taken them to a car boot on a couple of occassions and managed to sell none.
Music magpie is a site which will buy your old and unwanted cds, dvds and games. You go to the site and type in the barcode of what you want to sell and it will automatically give you a price they will pay you for it. Beware though, the prices are really low, I sold lots of cds and I think the majority sold for 25p (not a lot when you compare to what it propbably cost in the first place). The price did not put me off as I just wanted to get rid of what I had, to me it was better than throwing them away.
My husband on the other had refused to part with his music, he had even more discs than me but what not part with any for such a small sum.
Once you agree what music magpie are going to buy you then confirm the order and a few days later you will receive some pre-paid postage stickers through the post. This is great as you could pay a fortune to send your discs in the post, the only cost to you is the packaging you may use. So after receiving the stickers you send your disc to music magpie and wait for them to check your order and send you your cheque.
This part of the process seems to take a while, I think the longest I have had to wait is about a month, but you can check on your account online to see the status of your order. Eventually you will get a cheque through the post.
Another thing you need to be aware of is that often when you type in the barcode it will say 'we already have too many of this item please try again later'. This is annoying and happened to me many times, if they have too much stock they simply will not buy your cd or game.
After a few months of trying though they did except all of my discs, its just I had to do seperate orders.
I have mixed views on this website, I did manage to sell everything I wanted to and the whole process ran smoothly, but is it really worth it for the price of 25p a disc? I am unsure, to me it was better than throwing them away. To others, like my husband, you are better off keeping the discs rather than sell them for a such a small amount.
Summary: Makes more sense than throwing things away
