“ Share your family history and photos! „
I started using this free software 2 years ago and liked it so much that I upgraded to premium after a year when my site had reached about 250 members. It's now at the 450 mark and growing. After building the tree and importing it into the online site, I have largely used the online site to keep it updated. I love the various features which are intuitive to use such as family tree matching with others and face recognition for photo tagging (and seeing who you look like!). I recently took great pleasure in presenting a "book" to my 92 year old aunt with all of her ancestors and descendants. It's one of her treasures! I also love the child-friendly features (such as card games) which make the family tree something for young and old to enjoy. I'm glad to see myheritage is doing more to help with accessing genealogical records from around the world. The more that is done on this front the better! I'd also like to compliment the online support team as I've had questions from time to time that were answered promptly and completely. I have already recommended this product to my friends and will continue to do so.
This is the worst genealogy software I have ever tried. Sourcing is general and not very helpful. I could never find the "advanced" settings. The worst part is that it takes over your computer. After I ditched it, none of my other genealogy software works the way it used to. Also, it takes over your browser, even changing your homepage without asking. Scary and intrusive. I could write for hours. But you know what, it's just NOT WORTH THE FREE PRICE!
I actually heard about MyHeritage.com few years ago while watching a television program where they raved about the celebrity look-a-like feature on the site and how entertaining it was. After hearing this I had to check out it out. I was surprised to find not only did the site offer the fun aspect, but also included a plethora of useful information for those interested in genealogy.
On the front page of the website there are 5 links across the top of the page: Home, Celebrities, Community, Genealogy, and Downloads. MyHeritage.com links members from all around the world, therefore you may be related to someone out there and not even know it! To make things easier for members there are links to 25 different languages the page can be translated into.
The subsections of this page include Celebrity Collage, Celebrity Morph, and Look-alike Meter.
Celebrity Collage is my favorite part of this whole site. Here you can upload photos from your computer and the face recognition software (no downloads required) will present you with a list of 8 celebrities you most resemble. Now let me say this software is pretty cool, as well as advanced. If you load a picture with more than one person it will recognize all faces, scan them, and provide separate lists. The lists will start with the celebrity you most resemble and give you a percentage based on that fact, they also offer a little bio if you don't know whom the celebrity is. As I said before the software is pretty advanced, I once tried to trick it and upload a picture of my dog, but I just ended up looking the fool when it reported back that there were no human faces found! The only requirement of the software is that you upload a picture where you are facing straight on; otherwise you won't receive very accurate results. After you receive your compiled list of celebrities, you can email or post your collage on your Bebo or Photobucket pages to brag or give your friends a good laugh. If you're not too sure about the celebrity likeness, you can post it on the website for others to vote on.
Celebrity Morph is similar to Celebrity Collage, the only difference is that you pick your favorite celebrity and the software will animate a short movie of your picture morphing into the celebrity's face. This movie can also be posted on blogs, and social networks, as well as emailed.
Look-alike Meter is a great feature for parents. How many times have you heard friends and family debating as to whom your child looks more like, mom or dad? Well here is the answer! You just upload a picture of mom, dad, and junior and the Look-alike Meter will tell you which parent the kid resembles more and by what percent. Now the next time someone debates who your little tyke looks more like you can simply say, "Oh junior got his incredible good looks from me."
Subsections include: Members, Family Sites, and Photos
Here you can check out other members from all over the world. You can look up members by screen name or simply find members living in the same country using the interactive world map.
The most interesting part of this page is the family sites tab. Here you can look up family websites by last name. This is where you can see if you can find any long lost relatives. Results from the family site search will have icons next to the link stating whether the site is public, somewhat private, or completely private. If pages are private then you will have to request membership to the family page if you wish to look at it.
If you are looking for family members, then you also have the option to make your own family page and include information and pictures.
Subsections include: Genealogy Center, Message Boards, Research, Family Tree Builder.
Here is where the serious research gets completed. In this part of the site you can build your own family tree using the Family Tree Builder software. Using this software you can add names and photos found from various websites and your computer.
Inevitably, investigating the past will uncover more questions about generations long past that no one in your family can answer, that's where the Research link comes in handy. By entering the ancestor's first and/or surname, MyHeritage.com will search 1350 of the most popular genealogy databases on the net. You have the option before the search begins to add one or more variation of your surname from a list of possible choices. This surname variation list is offered in case ancestors immigrated to places such as America. Immigrants checked in at Ellis Island may have had their original surname altered. Once the search is carried out, results listed will be the websites that contain the information you are looking for, and how many matches are listed within those sites. MyHeritage.com will also list the results with icons stating whether the site is free to use or whether they require payment. This software however does need to be installed, but it only takes 2 seconds. A prompt will appear asking if you want to install the program, just click "Install" and everything else is taken care of.
The only downside is that if you are trying to run this search on an Apple Mac then you need to make sure you have the ActiveX software installed otherwise it won't be able to search.
Message Boards are pretty self explanatory, here you can post messages looking for information or ask questions. You can also search by keyword or topic through the message board to find specific information.
I find it so amazing that for all the wonderful aspects this website offers, everything on MyHeritage.com is free. Sign up is fast and simple as well as you guessed it, free! As you can probably tell I love this website, but how could you not? It offers vital information to families, as well as programs to give you a good laugh.
