Advantages: Great for networking, promoting events, keeping in touch
Disadvantages: Some profiles not working, spam by others
Myspace was a big advance for networking when it was first released. I personally joined it very early, quite near the start of it. At first it was a bit daunting with how it worked, but eventually the site changed to a basic layout which was easy to follow.
This then meant that friends could keep in contact with each other, as well as have their own profile for people to read and make new contacts.
Personally I used this to my advantage for music. Once Myspace Music was created it then enabled a band to create a profile which can have music uploaded for people to hear. Being in a band myself, this opened up many opportunities to find new fans who may be interested and also get some new songs and ideas heard to get feedback. This made it a lot easier compared to having to record a song onto CD and pass it along a group of friends.
Eventually music venues took off on Myspace, which then also meant it was easier for bands to get in contact with venues. This was a great networking tool for musicians to advance themselves.
While the website has also been great for friends to make new friends and keep in touch with others, I believe I personally, along with a lot of people, benifited it within the music industry.
Downsides of this site where when it became a bit more complex when users could change their profile by using raw HTML. This then meant some advances were getting used such as DIV Overlays and HTML coding. This sometimes was corrupt on the Myspace website, meaning profiles could not be read and cause problems for other people. This is why eventually it seemed to turn around and go back to the basics.
Summary: Personally, i think great for all upcoming musicians to promote their work
