Advantages: Simple, easy to find bands
Disadvantages: Added applications not great
It seems that most social networking sites have one 'hook' that they use to try and entice people to join. With myspace its always been about the music.
I joined myspace around three years ago when it was all the rage. My main reason for joining was to hear new bands. Its fairly easy to set up a profile and there are enough add ons for those who want to customise their profile.
As a veichle to access music, its has been phenomanlly successful, and in someway has shifted the power back to musicians and bands. Within minutes of recording a song an artist/ band can upload it onto their myspace page and the fans can hear it straight away. This has led to a lot closer relationship between the musicians and the fans, and has promted the music industry to think of more interesting ways of getting their music across. Myspace has become a useful marketing tool for record labels (for instance this week, you can listen to the new Kasabian album on myspace before its released). From when i joined where bands could upload only 4 songs, the site now allows a lot more, and some bands put their whole album up there, for people to download for free!
Perosnally, i've never used my profile to interact with others, just as a way of hearing new music. Myspace has tried to play catch up with sites such as Twitter and Facebook with more personalised applications, but to be honest those other sites do a better job, and myspace should stick to its 'hook' of being a brillaint site to follow music.
Summary: If you hear about a new band, this is the place to check them out
