Newest Review: ... or use file-sharing applications to download their music for free and risk getting virus's (or should I say virii?) and bad quality downloads, I have always to preferred to go out and buy the physical product from a shop, I like to have it there in my hand to look at and being a musician myself, I wouldn't dream of stealing from my favourite artists. The first thing that actually enticed me to buy music online was the fact that there were several unsigned and indepedent artists whose music I had grown to love, but a lot of it wasn't available commercially. However, we're now in the digital age and online things are a little different. U... more

Premium Review napster.com: Digital music is cheap, buy it legally! (396 words)

I remember Napster many years ago when they were actually an illegal file-sharing platform similar to Limewire. I'm pretty sure there was also a relatively large court case against them before they eventually went legal. Now Napster has become my favourite legal source of music online. I have, in the past, tried using several other services only to run into problems, including both iTunes and Amazon. Although most people I know would, sadly, rather go to bit-torrent sites or use file-sharing applications to download their music for free and risk getting virus's (or should I say virii?) and bad quality downloads, I have always to preferred to go out and buy ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Napster Funeral Eulogy (612 words)

Dear beloved, we are gathered here today to lament the passing of a friend treasured and beloved by all of us. The Napster we knew (v2.0 Beta 9.6) has died, the upstanding defender of freedom to exchange material has been murdered brutally by the forces of capitalism. Many of us came to know Napster only in its latter years at Internet bandwidth increased and downloading times dropped to the point that obtaining an average MP3 file via Napster needn't take the average user more than fifteen minutes or so. Napster did not have a pretty face. Its interface was, of course, crude at best but simple, functional and intuitive. The straightforward dividing ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review napster.com: Napster music (218 words)

I saw an ad online a few months ago for Napsters 7 day free trial, so thought I would give it a go. I thought that if it was any good, I wouldnt mind paying the £10 a month subscription - it sure beats paying around £10 per CD! So, I register and start to try it out. I was disappointed straight away as the first few songs I searched for were not recognised, and they werent really old or uncommon songs. After a while, I have downloaded a couple of albums onto my laptop. Its after this, I find out, that even though I have paid my £10 a month, I still technically wont be getting lots of new cd's! I put my disc in the disc drive ready to start burning, and its ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Music Rentals? (330 words)

I was told I should try Napster for downloading some music instead of always buying it on CD. My kids weren't able to help much because it looks like they don't use these kinds of sources so I was flying solo on this one. I signed up to the site to try out their free 7 day trial. Great I thought, maybe I can just find what I want and if I don't like it - I'll cancel and keep what I found. Wrong. As soon as I went in, after going through the set up process which included downloading software onto my computer, I found that despite having to pay £9.95 per month after the subscription ends - this only covered me for downloading music onto my computer. I ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review napster.com: Subscription service (152 words)
by - written on 16/07/08 (Useful, 20 readings)

I am going to focus on the subscription service offered by Napster in this review, although it also sells individual downloads. The subscription service charges a monthly fee and in return you can download as many songs as you like. This sounds great, but the problem is that if you stop paying, all of your songs disappear. This means that it isn't a particularly good deal unless you are willing to continue paying forever, as this means that you are essentially not buying anything, and in return for paying them have not actually gained anything. It could have some value for a short time to download as much music as you want and decide on what to buy individually later, ...  Read the complete review
