Advantages: Interactive, learn to take care of a pet.
Disadvantages: Using children for serveys and advertising.
Neopets is a virtual pet website based in a world called Neopia where it allows both children and adults to have up to four pets and look after them while interacting with people people on the site. It was first created in 1999 and was launched by launched by Adam Powell and Donna Williams. It is avalible in a number of languages.
The site has a whole host of games which the user and neopet can play, and earn neopoints. This is the currency used throughout the website. With neopoints you can buy clothes / food / books / treasure maps, anything really for your pet. Users can interact with their Neopets by reading books to them, caring for them, and playing with them. This makes them happy, like it would with a real pet.
However Neopets have been critised for a few things such as the "Immersive" advertising and the number of gambling-based games on the site. People think that this is not ethical for young children. "Immersive" advertising is where the players of the site can earn Neopoints from them by doing things such as playing advergames and taking part in online marketing surveys.
Neopets also have a range of merchandise such as soft toys, stickers and other fun things that children like, however, is Neopets just some big company trying to make money off children asking for these products?
I must admit, I used to play neopets and LOVED it, but after someone took over my account, and neopets did nothing to help, I felt they were not worth it.
In my opinion though, I do think neopets is a great game for little kids, its fun and you interactive with other children, and learn to take care of a pet. Kind of.
Summary: Its great for little kids.
