Advantages: Create some pets, it's free!
Disadvantages: Might be hard to get your children off!
neopets.com is a site predominantly aimed at young children and teenagers.
The aim of the site is to hold an account and become a member of Neopia, it is free to join and you will receive some neopoints and a few items for your new pet (once you create it).
It is very easy to join up, minimal information is required, children under 13 will need parental consent for certain aspects of the site, I believe when I was that age I got around this by just changing my age by a year or two so that I was old enough already to play all of the site.
You can earn neopoints by restocking your shop, buying and selling items, trading items, playing games and a host of other special events.
Points can then be saved in the bank or used to buy new toys, clothes, food etc for your neopet or to buy furniture and items for your neohome.
The site is quite good fun, even at the age of 20 I'll still enjoy the odd go on it! It's good fun for children and teaches them the value of earning something and then having to use it to pay for food and what not. The good thing as well is that if your child doesn't visit for a while their neopet won't die so it shouldn't bring on any unfortunate questions about death of pets etc.
It's great fun, quite educational too with word games and things like that. It can give your child hours of safe fun online. No e-mail address or anything like that are provided to other members of the site so there isn't much danger of your child being contacted by the wrong kind of people and there aren't any live chat rooms either so you don't have to worry about things not being monitored.
I would definitely recommend this site to young children it's an endless source of entertainment (sometimes even still for me at the age of 20!)
Summary: Great fun for most of the family.
