Orkut is a Social Networking website, and it is somewhat similar to Facebook, Myspace etc. Although I'm a part of both Orkut & Facebook i use Orkut everyday & Facebook twice or thrice in a week.

Orkut is a part of Google & was created by Orkut Buyukkoten a Turkish developer.

Here in UK Facebook is more popular then Orkut, but you will find most of the Facebook users on Orkut aswell.
Orkut is more popular in Brazil & Asia. it is the most visited site in Brazil & 2nd most visited in India.

Its almost 4 years now that i'm using Orkut, earlier it was just limited to join if you have got an invitation from a Orkut User. Like for the Gmail Account, but now anyone can register on Orkut you dont need any invitation.

If you have a Gmail account then you can login using the same login details of Orkut then you dont need to register, but if you want to use any other email account then you need to register first before using it.

Once you register then you can create your profile, put down all your interests, things about you, upload your photos, videos change your caption everytime you want to and so on.

You can also control the information about you, where you can show you personal, professional information to the other users, by giving access to your friends and no one else.

Orkut is different from Facebook in many ways, here anyone can view your profile, can send you a friend request, can look into your scraps. but you can control this by just allowing them to see you profile picture & your name rest you can hide from the visitors & only your friends can have a peep into your profile.
So its upto you if you want to accept any one friendship or not.

Orkut has good features, some of them are

Scrapbook :

Is where you leave message for each other, only one problem with this is you cannot leave any private message over here coz this scrapbook is accessible by everyone, although you can limit its view to only your friends visitors to your profiles wont be able to see your scraps. But if it has some disadvantage it has some advantage as well coz when you look into your friends scrap book you see all the scrap made to that person, so you can find some of your old friend with whom you can make contact.
The latest features of scrap book are that you can even send flash messages to anyone, or songs or videos in their scrap wish is good to wish someone on special occasion or dedicate a song.
You can also leave scarps in different languages, and i believe there are almost all the languages available.

Communities:

Is where any one can make an be a part of other community, if you want to be a part of a community you just need to click on join & most of the time the owner of the community gives you access to join it. This feature helps you to come in contact with many friends. Community can be anything like your place, school, college so it helps you to get in touch with those people or friend of yours with whom you have lost contact and for me this is something important as its unites you with your old pals.

You can sort your friend list by, friends, good friends, family, haven't met an all. You can be a fan of any one which shows on their profile or even on your profile when some one is your profile, also you can say about whether the person is sexy, or trustworthy so its good.
Also you can add some one on your crush list and if the person also adds you on the crush list then both come to know about that they have crush on each other.

When your screen appears you can also see the details of profiles who visited your profile ad whose profile you visited, but if you dont want to know and let others know when you visit the profile then you can change and hide it in your settings option.

The other feature i like is it gives reminders of your friends birthdays so that you can wish them on time which for me is another good feature as i dont forgets my most of the friends birthdays as almost everyone is there on Orkut.

You can add your fav videos also, but videos should be either on Youtube or Google videos.

The recent feature they have added is whenever any of your friend makes any appearance change on their profile like their name change, or add any new photos or videos so it notifies you in the Updates section so that you can have a look at the updates & also whenever you make any change your friends also get notify.

Also it has a feature when you visit any other person or your friend profile it shows the mutual friends of you both. so you come to know all common friends that are there.

Also you can set up a poll and ask for your friends views.
Another feature which is there is whenever there is any festival, or new year, and you want to vish everyone in your friends list but you get tired or lazy to wish everyone then there are codes by which you cans send same message to everyone in one click which saves your time.
I just love using Orkut because it made my contact with all my friends with whom i lost contact, school friends college friends, so know i atleast how they are and what they doing these days.
And specially it helps me to be in touch with my friends when i'm here in UK & not back in India.

And Orkut everytime brings in new features to it so it makes it more fun to use it.
I Do recommend all of you to atleast give it a try, and i'm sure you will find most of your friends here to.
