OK, so I'm probably a bit slow off the mark here, learning HTML just as XML etc is being developed, but I thought I should learn a simple language before going after a more complicated one.

I found this most excellent site after following links from W3C XHTML web-site and it wasn't the only tutorial I came across. It was, however, the best. Simple to follow, not patronising and with many examples of what he was talking about so you don't feel like it's purely an academic exercise.

The amount of information per page is good too, so you can save a particular page easily without loads of stuff you don't want. Plus, there are sidebars which are good for reference (eg Hex colours).

I have picked up most of what I need to know to design a web-page (in fact I just have) and it only took me about 4 hours. I don't think that's too bad.

The rest of the web-site is excellent as well. There are tools for checking problems with pages and explanations of how and where to locate your web-page, plus tutorials on more complicated aspects of web-design.
