Advantages: Sort out the togas from the Guatemalan death Gods! Easy to use, very interesting and useful for students, writers or just people who want to know more!
Disadvantages: Well, perhaps some longer articles...but it is an encylopedia after all
Imagine your embarassment: You're dead and find yourself confronted by a gaggle of Gods. Not only can you not tell one from the other, you don't know who's Roman, which ones are Greek, or how to pronounce any of their names! Not the best start for life On The Other Side, my friends... Thank the Gods, then, for www.pantheon.org! This excellent and fascinating website is a database of articles and definitions of world mythology. It covers all the main areas, such as Greek, Roman, Celtic and so on, but delves into myths you didn't even know existed! What a wonderful change this site is from the sprawling mass of complication and confusion many websites are today. The navigation is clean cut and simple to use. There no advertising banners, and you could while away many an hour following the interlinked descriptions and explanations presented for you. You can use a word or subject search, browse by country, randomly click away to your heart's content or even submit your own article to the database. There aren't many images here, it's mainly text based (and you can click on a link next to any of the definitions or articles to go to a special easy to print version). The site does have an image library, but is mainly devoted to researching. This site would be a vital resource for those studying the subject, or those who come across references to mythology in books and would like more information. An especially useful site for writers and journalists, as the word search is excellent. Type in the word 'death' and you are taken to an article about death cults; information about a girl who cried when her brother was turned into a thistle finch (well, you can understand her distress!); a Polynesian 'all-devouring' deity; 'Bulu' - the land of death in Fijian cosmology; a Guatemalan God of Death... and so on and on and on... I have an encylo
pedia of mythology, and it's one of those books I've dipped into now and again, always meaning to read more but never getting around to it. This online (and free) continually evolving version means you can click and learn whenever you feel the need, without trying to flick through a massive book to find every reference to unicorns, or whatever. It is best used as a stepping stone, this website - find a subject or God that interests you, and then you can go away and find out more. The articles are not meant to be definitive, just as a normal printed enyclopedia cannot tell you all the facts. Top marks for an informative, well thought-out, easy to use and painstakingly produced site. Who knows, a bit of time clicking away here might help you win big bucks on Who Wants to be a Millionaire!!!
