Advantages: Security for the buyer

Disadvantages: If you are a seller make sure everything is sent recorded delivery!!

I was first introduced to Paypal when I became involved in selling on Ebay in about the year 2000. At the time Paypal was independent and was not owned by Ebay as it is today. It was a great way of getting paid, especially from abroad. The alternative was usually US dollars stuffed in an envelope or a foreign cheque that cost a fortune to cash. Payment was also received very fast.

Moving on a few years Ebay decided it wanted more of the pie and gobbled up Paypal. In my opinion this is were the service went downhill. No longer was it an option to receive paypal, it was now compulsory in certain categories. So as well as ebay getting a good slice of the commmision from the Auction, they also get a cut from Paypal.

In my opinion Paypal also lean very heavily towards the buyer. If an item doesn't arrive the seller needs to provide a tracking number, so most people can't use the normal postal system. Also if somebody uses a credit card with paypal they can ask for a chargeback months and months later, which I have found to my cost.

I still use them...........but only when I have to.

Summary: I use this on occasions I have no other choice.
