In the minefield of dating websites out there Plentyoffish is one of the few websites that is completely free! I was a cautious when I first registered as I thought there might be some hidden costs such as having to pay to send e-mails but you don't, it's all free!

Registering is straightforward. You set up a user name and password then create your profile. Your profile will need to include the following although some parts are optional:

- Your location (city)
- Star sign
- Height
- Age
- Ethnicity
- Body type
- Smoker or non smoker
- Religion
- How often you drink alcohol
- Occupation
- Marital status
- Eduaction
- Do you want/have children
- Drug user?!
- If you own a car or not
- Interests

You then need to fill in a couple of boxes telling people a bit more about who you are as a person and where you would like to go on your first date.

It is not compulsory to upload a picture however you are more likely to get interest if you do. You can upload up to eight photos and they must show a visible head shot of yourself.

Once you have set up your account you are free to browse other members! The search tool allows you to search members by sex, age and distance from your postcode. A list of members matching your criteria will be displayed complete with their photo and a brief description. All you need to do is click on their photo or user name to view their full profile.

There are two ways you can show another member you are interested:

- Add them as a favourite
- Send them an e-mail

There is an option for you to see who has viewed your profile. This is handy but remember the same will be done for you and I do find it a bit strange when I see female members viewing my profile!

There is also an instant message application on the site so if you see someone you like you can send them aninstant message. There is an option to disable this which I have done as I kept getting strange messages from guys miles away!

You can restrict the users that e-mail you by changing your e-mail settings. You can select only members that fit your criteria such as blocking married people or limiting the distance of members from you.

The overall layout of the website is very basic but then I guess it is free so you cannot really complain! It's quite easy to use and navigate.

The messages you recieve are on this website only so no-one will know your personal e-mail address unless you give it to them.
E-mail notifications will be sent to you private e-mail address though when you receive a new message or someone adds you as a favourite.

A word of warning though, just keep your wits about you when using this kind of site! Not everyone is honest about themselves on their profiles and you soon learn to spot this type of person! Overall I would recommend this site, it is free after all and you never know, the man or woman of your dreams might be there waiting for you!
