Advantages: none - this site is completely dishonest
Disadvantages: you'll loose your money and your poem will be stuck in a volume with complete junk
Okay go to a search engine and type in the words poetry and scam... see what you get! That's exactly what I did when I supposedly 'won' a place in their latest competition. After the initial delight that my work had been recognised I read on to find that my work would be in print and I could 'purchase' a copy of the book for about $60. That's when the alarm bells started to ring and I tried the trick I just mentioned!
If you can't be bothered to go to a search engine then try this url 'http://wind.wind.org/ilp.htm' It details all you need to know about poetry.com It also tells you quite a lot about the other names they operate under.
Personally I'm furious that this site is allowed to continue. After being selected as a semi finalist I emailed them asking what percentage of entrants reached this stage... unsurprisingly I didn't get a response. I then emailed them asking them to withdraw my poem from publication - they still ignored me! I then visited their site and 'edited' my poem changing it to a critique on poetry.com and encouraging anyone that read it to visit the site I have already mentioned... their response? they edited it back again!
This site is completely dishonest, IT IS NOT A COMPETITION! almost everyone gets through to the semi final and thereafter you are subjected to copious amounts of junk mail telling you how wonderful your poem would look on a ruddy plate or wall plaque. This site makes money off people who are flattered to have their work recognised.
If you have entered this competition then please don't purchase anything from them. It takes a lot of courage to admit you've been had but you'll feel better in the long run if you at least refrain from lining their pockets! If you haven't visited them then stay well clear!!!!

- 12/08/01 My poem was too be publsished, the reasons they aint in the library is it's american. I was invited over to amreica because I was a finalist in the comp, but I did want to go but I couldn't. I wasn't prepared to buy the book, as I know that maybe in the future I could go somewhere with my poetry, seems like my own talent. |
