Most of the time now when I want to check out a route, I use the Shell GeoStar server (www.shellgeostar.com). You have to register to use this, but its free. One nice thing is that this covers the rest of Europe too. It does mean that it can remember your home address, which saves some time for new journeys. The RAC travel planner WWW site works well enough for UK journeys, but when I try to use, it, 50% of the time I get an error about it being too busy. When you can get in, the route selection and interface work well enough, and there is a nice feature that lets you get sent an email with the latest traffic information for a given route just before you plan to leave.
