Rightmove.co.uk is a great comprehensive website if you're looking for a property to buy or rent. It features almost all of the major estate agents and you the search is simple to use yet quite advanced. You can search by localaity within a certain radius of your preferred location/post code and you can search by type such as house style, number of bedrooms, new builds etc.

Some areas can have a lot of property so it's useful to be able to filter your search results and narrow down a selection. Some estate agents upload lots of photos, floor plans and particulars meaning you can get detailed information about the property without having to leave the rightmove website - very handy. You can also click on a local map to see the approximate position of the property.

I have mainly used rightmove to find property for sale but it is also quite useful for finding rental property.

Rightmove is less suitable if you are looking for commercial property - it seems primarily geared for the residential market although they have begun to include overseas property (which seem a bit expensive as I'm sure you can find cheaper with the local agents as the ones who advertise internationally are probably inflating the prices somewhat).

Another useful feature I find is being able to search for recently added property i.e property added to rightmove in the last 24 hours, 3 days or 7 days. This means you don't have to look through all the previous search results again.

However you still need to be in contact with locals agents as some properties sell quickly and I have seen signs go up and details put in local agents offices but those properties took time to be listed or were sold before they could be listed on rightmove.

Summary: must visit if you're looking for a property to buy or rent
