I've been doing family history (genealogy) for over five years now, and it is a hobby which has become increasingly popular since the start of the tv show Who Do You Think You Are? As shown on the BBC. There are lots of ways to do your family tree online, but a lot are costly and time consuming. Rootschat is a forum which I came upon completely randomly, and which I am very glad I found. By looking for relatives on GenesReunited, another website aimed at those doing genealogy, I came across a lady who was also looking for ancestors of mine. When I decided to start researching my family tree over 12 months ago I had no idea where to start, what to do or how to do it. If you type subject matter of Genealogy into Google it will bring up 42.6000.000 items and 4.8 million if restricting the research to the UK alone. So starting out is quite a scary prospect unless you know someone who is already researching their family tree and can point you in the right direction, which luckily for me I did know someone and I can now share these options with you. Rootschat.com This is an easy to use (well so they say) messaging forum for everyone researching their family history or local history. The focus is on Ireland and the British Isles. Local historians and family historians have a great deal of knowledge to share. This service is absolutly free and very benefitting. A newly wed couple started up this site they are called Tristan and Sarah. Tristan has a great knowledge of computers and sarah has a big interest in Genealogy and History, so they combined their hobbies and made this site which was launched in December 2003.
