Advantages: MONEY, MONEY, MONEY
Disadvantages: NONE
I first heard of Saros through a surfing session on Dooyoo. The opinion said there was good money to be made, so i decided to give it a whirl. The site itself its totally self explanatory, so i won't go into detail. They conduct their research by the way of discussion groups and surveys. I want to tell you about my success with saros, and by reading other opinions, it looks like i am one of very few. Joining saros was easy, just a questionnaire which took about 8 minutes to complete. One thing i will advise is do fill in all questions asked, no matter how personal, it is from the results of these questions that they will see if you fit exactly what they are looking for. After filling in the form, i had a welcome e.mail, and then heard nothing for a week. then out of the blue, i has an e.mail from them, asking if i wanted to take part in a dicussion about board games. It was to take just one hour, and refreshments would be provided, and a £30 payment would be made. I decided not to take this up as i live an hours train ride away, and when i accounted for my train fare, i did't feel it was worth it. Two weeks later however they offered me another discussion opportunity. It was to last 3 hours, refreshments were to be provided, and a payment of £60 was to be made, and the subject was instant coffee. I decided to go for it, and so said i was interested. The next day i recieved a telephone call from Saros, asking me a few more questions. I asked the reason for the phone call, and she said that there would be no point in sending a tea lover to a discusion about coffee!!! The phone call lasted about five minutes, and she said i sounded perfect, and would put me forward. The company have the final say as to who will attend. Directions were given by e.mail, and i got there totally not knowing what to expect. We were shown into the room, and were told that the mirror was a two way mirror. The discusion w
as mainly about feelings and our moods, and how a coffee would fit into our life. I found it really interesting. The whole discussion went really quick, the lunch was superb, and we were then handed an envelope with £60 cash in it!!!! About 3 weeks later i was asked if i would like to participate in a hair diary. To qualify i had to have bad conditioned hair, and be able to write in a descriptive manner. To show i qualified i had to decribe my hair, then had to make up a paragraph using a few words they had selected to me to use. I must have done well, because a couple of days later i recieved a phone call from saros again. I was told i would have to write about my hair for a week, and take polaroid pictures of my hair. I did, it was quite in depth, but in all i think i spent about 4 hours in total writing it. I was paid £120 for this and payment was the week after i completed it and by cheque. I haven't heard from Saros for a few months, but the woman did say to me they don't like to use the same person more than 5 times per year, because they like to give everybody a chance. The only survey i have recieved so far, is one that i recieved yesterday, and by the looks of it, its a pre-questionnaire, which means by how you answer, will be how they select for the 'real' questionnaire. Overall i have been paid £180 for about 7 hours work. I don't recommend you join saros if you don't live close to London, because this is where all of the discussions take place. Surveys don't come often, so the discussion groups are where the money is. I am looking forward to recieving more offers from Saros, if you live close to London, why don't you join, just be patient, i am sure you will be asked to partake. Don't forget each group requires people from all different kinds of backgrounds, and they will only select people that they feel will be suitable. Go on, give it a go!!

- 26/07/05 Nice review, outdated a bit, the advice to not bother (essentially) if not living in the London area no longer really applies.
Birmi ngham, Liverpool, Bristol, and other large towns get their share of focus group work now.
My wife and I have received at least 4 invitations in Bristol recently.
The "5 times a year" is a bit misleading, as it implies that the next year you may get the same. Once you have been selected for 4 or 5 sessions, you are not likely to get any more focus group work, according to their rules, as you then become "semi-professional in focus group work" and market researchers want "naive attendees" usually. After about 2 years they reckon to stop using you. |

- 04/06/03 Your op was very interesting although I don't think I'll bother joining at the moment since I probably wouldn't be able to make the discussions. So thanks for that tip about not very many surveys! |

- 13/08/02 I signed up with these I can't remember how long ago, maybe it was last year. I've heard from them about once, and never been given a full survey. This explains why, because I live in Lincolnshire. |
