"ScreenToaster.com" is a video recording website. It was first launched in 2008 and has consistently risen in popularity. Alexa traffic research ranks the website as being the 30626th most accessed website in the world. It receives 42.2% of its traffic from computers based in the United States, but also receives a 4.2% share from the United Kingdom.
There have been times when I have found myself needing to quickly record what was happening on my computer screen. In the event of erratic behaviour from programs it's often hard to load independent screen capture software due to the additional strain on an already "lagged" system. I recently came across ScreenToaster.com but have been very impressed with the service it has provided me thus far.
To record a video users must first be registered with the website. As with most services, the website will ask for the typical username, password and e-mail address for validation. After the user has validated his or her account he or she will be redirected to the control panel to begin recording. Clicking the appropriately labeled "record" button will load a Java applet which requires the user to have a recent version of Java Runtime Environment. This software is available free of charge and most modern web browsers will direct the user as per the installation instructions. After the applet loads the user will be shown a video screen of his or her desktop; or more specifically the ScreenToaster screen. Clicking "start recording" will launch a five second countdown and after the mouse cursor begins flashing anything on screen will be recorded. When the user finishes his or her presentation, holding the ALT and S keys will stop the recording and give four options to the user regarding how to save it. I have found "upload to screentoaster (high quality)" to be both fast and efficient in its processing, and I'm always able to send around my video creations in a matter of moments. The other options include "Upload to Youtube", "Save as .mov" and "Same as .swf".
The website is quick to load and responsive to my commands. Independent testing suggests 6.5 sceonds are required to load 1.6 MB when using a broadband connection. While this number may initially appear to be high, it if offset by the convenience and functional power the service offers. When recording I do find my computer becomes noticeably sluggish. Mouse movements appear very jerky and slow to update on my screen. Often when trying to record between two items, such as different points on two websites, it takes several seconds for the website to change on screen and this adds to the overall size of the video file. When I stop recording the strain is immediately relieved and my computer functions as normal again. I also find that any slow movements correct themselves and playback of my videos are generally smooth and well timed.
The convenience of a no frills desktop recording experience greatly outweighs the strain my computer noticeably goes through when recording, and the lack of intrusive third party downloads is something I greatly appreciate. I would happily recommend ScreenToaster.com to prospective users.
Summary: Thumbs up
