Advantages: You want it.... They got it
Disadvantages: Some bad tagging means a few surprises
Online music listening can be a curse, downloading of music can be expensive (often not seeing the value you do when purchasing a CD), or if your more tight-fisted bordering on the illegal. Often listening to music is a trial; you hear one song that rocks your world and purchase the CD (Or Download the album) only to discover that there was one good track, the rest utterly diabolical. Last year of the many albums I purchased I felt quite disgruntled with the majority. For people like myself who spend the day sat in front of a computer when your own music becomes monotonous, and listening to various radio stations really gets your back up, the only alternative is to buy more CD's, because if not the local radio's cheesy adverts, or the insipid tones of the ultra fake Fearne Cotton may result in you taking the life of an innocent bystander.
Some months back I discovered the wonder of Last FM, the website allows you to listen to selected artists of your choice, and to use their streaming radio as a discovery tool to find brand new music. Last FM changed the way I work, as I travelled new paths and listened to new music daily, but this was just the beginning of my online music quest. By accident I discovered Seeqpod a website you can find at www.seeqpod.com, now the door has been flung open like never before.
Imagine a world where you could listen to music from pretty much any artist, and from any time, a world where music you have not heard for years is suddenly there eagerly awaiting your selection, rewarding you with the joy of some heavy foot tapping, and memories that only music can truly reward you with. This is the world of Seeqpod.
Seeqpod works rather like Last FM, but does not really allow you the honour of discovering new music like the aforementioned site. What Seeqpod does however is allow you to hunt down music your aware of and then create your own playlists. Listen to one song by an artist or 100 different ones; discover the original tracks, or brand new experimental remixes. Each day before I start work, I spend twenty minutes selecting my favourite music from across the passages of time and building playlists of thousands of music tracks... The big question I guess your asking is what does it cost?
Rather than allowing you to download music, Seeqpod streams it for you allowing you to listen instantly and in doing so not breaking any regulations. You see Seeqpod is completely free, often using trusted and respected websites to stream music through its integrated (no installation required) player. Because you're streaming it rather than downloading, Seeqpod exploits a few laws, not in an abusive way though, in fact the site is approved by a number of music companies and music related bodies.
There are some weaknesses in the system, some incorrect labelling does cause you to get something you did not expect once in about every hundred songs, but you can usually add it again, there are generally a few dozen options for each popular track.
Like a number of other sites, Seeqpod makes its money through advertising on each page are a series of banners and options to purchase certain tracks, they take a small share of this referral, and by all accounts doing very well thank you very much.
It's not just about the music, like audio books? Stream them, want to do some research? it links into Wikipedia, and should you want to watch some video's yes it will do that for too using popular websites as well as good old fashioned Youtube from music video's to news reports across the globe. There is one aspect you can download... Ringtones, Seeqpod seeks out "freeware" ringtones, although you need to figure out how to transfer this to your phone.
If you're curious to hear Frank Zappa's "Frogs With Dirty Little Lips", Susan Christies "I Love Onions" , bonkers about Joe Dolce's "Shut Up A Your Face", barmy for Bollywood, or quite simply a sucker for the classics of Beethoven; you'll find something to entertain you at Seepod, and each day as more and more people discover Seeqpod the websites variety grows, expect this to be the next big thing next year.
