Sharescope is a subscription product (costs £11.95 / month) from Ionic Information Limited available from www.sharescope.com. Note: it is not web-based, you get a full application on CD (or you can download it) & thus you do not need to be on the internet to use it.

It comprises of a database of all UK shares (including those on the AIM & similar) and holds a wealth of information on each, this includes…
- Price & volume data (including high & low’s)
- Company information (such as Profit, turnover, EPS, dividends, P/E, capital, volatility, director dealings etc etc)
- AFX news

The data is downloaded via the internet or a dedicated dialup number which takes from a few seconds to a minute or two (if done daily). E-mail is also built into the application.

Within ShareScope you can keep your own multiple portfolios and analyse the data via the wealth of graphing tools, this is where ShareScope comes into it’s own…
The graphing tools are excellent, there is simply nothing that you can’t do! Right from the basic rolling averages, trend lines & multiple stop-loss lines right up to the advanced standard deviation, fibonacci arcs & fans, coppock momentum indicators – you name it, it’s there!

A really useful feature is the data-mining capability which can be really useful for picking shares, e.g. Search for a share between a certain price with a P/E in a certain range. Combine this with the news & company fundamentals; you have a really neat way of deciding on your next investment.

What is very impressive is that all this functionality is extremely well integrated & navigation is easy, although you will need to take a few minutes to take note of the keyboard shortcuts. A particularly nice feature is the scroll bar of the mouse (if you have one) is used to scroll through the companies; you can quickly zoom in & out & even ‘scribble’ on the graph!


Overall, a godsend for any ‘charting’ enthusiast & a very useful tool for the average investor – I wouldn’t be without it!
