Newest Review: ... of newsgroups - some sensible, some daft; there are trolls (attempting to get people to reply to obvious posts) and flamers (people just out for an argument) are also present. Annoyingly, there's a culture of people trying to get the 'first post' on any topic, which seems slightly pathetic. Thankfully, posts are 'moderated', that is, given a score according to how good / relevant they are. This means you can (in theory) filter out irrelevant posts. You can gain moderator status by posting comments and reading other comments - anybody can get a login on Slashdot, and even if you don't become a moderator you can ... more

Premium Review slashdot.org: The Slashdot effect (377 words)
by - written on 02/08/01 (Very useful, 44 readings)

Slashdot is an online news source, aimed at computing and technology in general. A wide spectrum of topics are covered, from industry news to film reviews. The main source for these articles is people sending in links to sites or news stories elsewhere, together with a write up. Good stories then appear on the main page, and that's where the fun starts. Readers are encouraged to comment on the stories, which can lead to a good range of comments, often drifting on to other topics. These comments are like a microcosm of newsgroups - some sensible, some daft; there are trolls (attempting to get people to reply to obvious posts) and flamers (people just out for ...  Read the complete review

/. (as it is referred to) is a technology/internet/computing news site with the slogan 'News For Nerds - Stuff That Matters'. It's primary focus for news articles tends to be orientated around the open source/Linux market, but general 'funnies' (such as the amihotornot site) and news (such as the US election) are covered. Slashdot works on the basis of news being submitted to the system, then the 'owners' deciding which news to post. Once the news has been posted, users get the option to 'comment' on the item (free registration is available but not necessary). To reduce inappropriate posts (sometimes classed as ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review News for nerds, stuff that matters (306 words)

A word of warning first, Slashdot will most likely not appeal to everyone. It is a website that brings the reader the latest technology news, mostly related to computing, but also including such topics as science, patents and censorship. The site acts as a giant message board, where people can contribute their views on a particular subject. Members can post using their user ID, or can log in as an Anonymous Coward. Each viewpoint is moderated on a scale of -1 to +5, so you can set your preferences to ignore the worst of the postings. One thing to watch out for - don't feed the trolls! A troll is someone who deliberately tries to provoke others ...  Read the complete review
