Advantages: fun easy way to earn some extra money
Disadvantages: not genre specific
As a student, I find myself constantly in need of money! I also find myself sitting in my room a lot of the time on my computer so I always thought earning a bit of money online is a way better use of my time than scrolling through Facebook or watching videos on Youtube! In fact, this is the same reason I joined dooyoo and after the success I found here, I've been looking for other similar ways to earn a few extra pennies. I found a review for Slice the Pie here on dooyoo and thought it sounded great, but didn't actually sign up until I read about it again on a student blog for ways to earn some money while studying.
Slice the Pie is a music reviewing website - you hear a song and write a review of it - it's that simple! You get paid for each review and can withdraw your money once you have earned US$10. It's bit annoying that you can only get paid in $US but it's not a problem - you get the money into your PayPal account in your own currency, but it's harder to keep track of how much you've earned in your own currency.
The process is very simple - you click 'scout' at the top and a song will start playing - you can start typing your review as soon as it's started, but you can't submit your review until you've heard 90 seconds. You also have to give the song a rating out of 10. The song continues after 90 seconds if you need to listen a bit more. As soon as you click submit, it scans your review and tells you how much you have earned for it and you click 'next' to review another song. It is really addictive and I always find myself clicking next way more times than I planned!
You get more money for better reviews and better reviews include technical terms, lengthy detail and discussion of potential for the song to be a hit. I earn about $0.10 - $0.15 which isn't a lot, but considering it's 2 minutes' work from the comfort of your own home, it's not too bad. I have a background in music - I play the piano and bass guitar and I have a GCSE in Music as well as being a huge music fan and reading lots of mysic blogs and magazines so I'm used to reading music reviews and have learnt a lot of the terms that will get you higher payments per review. If you don't know much about music, this might not be the best site for you! However, practice makes perfect and it might be worth giving it a go as you will most likely improve (as I'm sure most of us have here on dooyoo!).
As far as I can tell, the site is used for artists to get feedback on their music. Most of the songs are from unsigned artists, but occasionally there are big names. I assume artists pay the site to get feedback and this is how they can afford to pay people reviewing.
During the sign-up process it asked me for my favourite genres (I selected metal, rock, screamo, emo), but after a bit more reading up on the site, this doesn't actually mean anything! You get a completely random song each time to review - any genre and any artist. This does make it difficult because I know a lot about my chosen genres, but not a lot about rap or country! I still manage to review other genres and get paid fairly decently for it so it's not too bad.
Overall I give it 4/5 - it's a great and simple way to make money, but it won't be for everyone and you can't be genre specific. If you would like a referral link send me a message - it' highly recommended.
