Search Engines are 2 a penny these days, which is why it was refreshing to find someting a bit different for a change. Sparksearch.com doesn't use dmoz.org which makes a change, it has a UK specific search engine that actually is UK specific! While that may sound a bit boring it is actually quite useful - e.g: your searching for a UK only property site and you constantly get US property sites on AV or google. The rest of the site is just the usual stuff you come to expect as standard on any self respecting Search Engine these days. e.g; news, free email, mobile stuff, etc. But the search engine (which is what its supposed to be after all) is what counts and thats what really excels. Its not quite google, but the design is clean enough and doesn't take too long to load so i'll have to reccomend it to UK USERS!
Sparksearch is a great little search engine. I’m probably a bit biast as I work on other web projects with the owner of the site, but it is one of those search engines that is fast and efficient and will throw your results back at you in a friendly and easy way to view them. The design is good, and different to other search engines, which is refreshing. The site also offers you webcams, mp3’s and shopping. You can even have your own web based e-mail account with them if you wish. The content is all based on British websites, so you won’t get any American stuff back if your looking for something in Britain. The only thing which is a bit off putting is that when you have clicked a link to go to another website, it loads the page up within a frame, leaving a sparksearch banner at the bottom of your page, but it does make it very easy to get back to sparksearch if you want to click on another link which may be of relevance to you. All in a ll, a good little site which is getting bigger and bigger. I have seen it being built and it has gone far since then, I only hope it will go further.
Sparksearch, for a small and relatively unknown search engine, should be up there with the big boys. It is quick, easy to use and the results are usually far more relevant than anything you will get on a larger search engine. It seems to concentrate on UK sites more than worldwide, but its perfect for me as I study Leisure and Tourism GNVQ, I ofter need to find information on the UK Leisure and Tourism industry, sparksearch is perfect. I can see 2 major faults. When you click a link, it leaves a spark search banner at the bottom of the page, this takes up about an inch of space at the bottom of the screen and can be very annoying. The other fault is that rather than just the URL of the site in the address bar, it has the sparksearch URL in front which means that if you add the site to your favorites, every time you visit it, it will have the bar at the bottom. Other that than, sparksearch is great!! :o)
This is a good site, a direct competitior to yahoo, but with a slightly more British twist. Its search engine is alright, offering a standard search very similar to excite or lycos. It also offers other services such as mobile alerts. These are useful but other sites do them better (such as quios). They also offer a homes portal to their site, however seemingly this was forbidden! So no review. They use the open directory content for their directory site so you know that its of a high quality but its nothing that can't be go elsewhere. the site design is quite good, simple and uncluttered it loads vey quickly. A competant seach engine but it offers nothing new and most of its functions are done better elsewhere.
