What happens when you take three guys who are major computer game fans and also professional website designers. You end up with a jam packed gaming information website called spong... Basically the website aims to document the entire history of the computer games industry. Including information on over 30,000 games past, present and future, plus game news, charts and a release date list. With a database containing 30,000 games I decided to put it to the test. I searched for "populous" and indeed it found all the populous games ever created for all the platforms. Very impressive I thought. But then I realised the unfortunate truth. Although the website may have a database of 30,000 games that isn't really useful unless you provide some articles on the games themselves. E.g. for the populous game there was a screen print showing the main menu, the genre (type of game), plus information about when it was released and the platforms it appeared on. Also there were links to related games in the database. But that was it, no review and no articles. I then tried searching for a popular new title, Black and White, however yet again no articles or reviews, just a screen print showing the black and white logo... A database containing 30,000 games is simply of no use if all it can provide is a picture and iformation about when it was released. Reviews, articles, downloads for each game would make this site one of the best. But as it stands it is verging on the useless. However the news section, full of information about E3 at the moment, and the charts section give the website some useful value. Although it must be said there are much better game websites around! - 24/02/03 I think it's about time "dooyooexpert" revisited the site, as it seems to have moved on a great deal since since that scathing review.
Sure, the site might not have the info you want on every game, but that's the nature of such an ambitous project. If you've got fond memories about a game that's not on the site you could always use the "submit info" button.
Just look at that front page and you'll see they're constantly pumping new info into the database, so they're clearly up to something all the time. It now lists over 55000 games and virtually all of the latest titles are rammed to the gills with stuff like reviews, screens and guides. It's also one of the best video games news sources I come across, regularly publishing exclusives.
Best of all, you don't have to pay to use the site, and being able to hop around from news to game to software house to another game to programmer to news, etc, is a unique experience, excepting the IMDb!

- 23/04/02 They do have full reviews, screenshots, summaries and hints and tips for nearly 5000 games.
And the welcome submissions from user for the rest. So instead of trashing them, why not submit a review of populous? |

- 23/06/01 I think you are being a bit harsh on them. There are over 30,000 games listed and the information they have got for them seems pretty good, remember they probably do this for a hobby as it won't keep 3 people living! Obviously it could be better but i just think your bein a tad harsh on them. |
