Firstly I'd like to point out that the spelling of Counselor is the American version and the one we're supposed to use!!!
Summer Camp Worldwide is undoubtedly the ultimate resource for those wishing to be Summer Camp Counselors in America.
SCW is run by former camp counselors so you can be sure that the site is will be tailored for what you need.
The site is split into several sections.
Home - The place to start! Easy links to navigate your way around the site.
Summer Camp Guide - This comprehensive resource is an amazing tool for prospective counselors. This section includes what summer camp actually is, example daily schedules, the different types of camps, the culture at camp and much much more. There are also several sub sections of this page explaining the different roles of counselors, a 'who should apply', Application guide, hints and tips on the interview you are likely to have with your sponsor agency, a summer camp FAQ section, Info about Visa's and travel within the States, past staff feedback and advice, things you should think about taking, a USA guide and even a page for parents of future counselors. The information is vast and you can spend hours reading. You should definitely read through these sections before applying and filling in your forms.
Jobs USA - Many US companies have chosen to advertise their positions directly with the site due to it's popularity. The section is constantly updated when new jobs are available and you can find some of America's biggest camps on here. The range of camps advertising is also superb.
World Jobs - In addition to American camps, the site also lists opportunities as far away as China.
Interactive - Feedback from previous counselors like this...
"The best decision you'll ever make. Camp was totally different to what I could ever imagine, it's the best summer you'll ever have! Explore the real America and make life long friendships with people all over the world. Amazing is an uderstatement." (That was written by....me!) Staff diaries, pictures from the summer, tons of links to other websites and social networking pages, camp videos and a map of where you are from.
Shop - Link to an outdoor/camping store. The prices are reasonable and the stock is good quality. It also helps to keep the site running.
Forum - This links to the chat forum where you can post your comments, questions and reviews. This is a great source for asking questions you might feel a little silly asking your sponsor agency and also getting specific feedback from previous staff. The forum lists more summer camp jobs in addition to other work and volunteer/meaningful travel opportunities. There's also many topics on summer camp. You can bet your bottom dollar that if you have a question, it will already be on the forum somewhere. If you can't find it in the FAQ section then just post it in one of the camp topics and it will be answered. The forums are moderated by lovely people (like me!) and we have all been counselors before and know exactly what you are going through, as we have been through it ourselves. The forum is also a great place to find other people who are going to your camp. There is a placements section where you can search for your camp and get in touch with people before the summer. This is great for breaking boundaries as the other person is probably exactly the same as you, a little nervous about meeting people. Maybe you can meet up before the summer too!
There is also a travel section to the forum where you can post your travel plans and see if any other site users fancy doing the same. Many camp counselors are solo travellers and would love to be able to travel with like minded people. Gap year info is also available. General chat and Camp voting polls are also there for your perusal.
Some of the most useful parts of the forum are the packing lists. The lists you get from camp are often unrealistic and aimed at children, not staff. These lists come from former counselors (I wrote one) so we know what we do and do not need to take which is very helpful when trying to pack your bags!
Sponsor agencies like CCUSA, Camp America and BUNAC all obviously recognise that the site is hugely popular as they actually sponsor sections of the forum. You will even find discussions on what agency to go with as that is a huge decision and is often discussed. Some of the forum users are actually employed by the companies and come on to help out.
We always welcome new people to our community and we're eager to help you when we can. Drop me a line if you visit the forum or message me/comment here if you have any questions about camp as I'd be delighted to help you. I am a 4 year counselor and always happy to help out. Just look for 'Matty' on the forums.
The website also branches out in to a whole bunch of other websites. These are...
One World 365 : Volunteer Projects, Volunteer Overseas, Ecotourism, Adventure Holidays, Gap Year 365 : Gap Year, Career Break, Gap Year Work, Gap Year Volunteering, Gap Year Travel ,Seasonal Jobs 365 : Seasonal Jobs, Seasonal Work, Summer Jobs, Winter Jobs, Working Holidays ,Summer Camp Jobs 365 : Summer Camp, Summer Camp Jobs, Camp Jobs, Summer Camp USA , Tefl 365 : TEFL Jobs, TESL Jobs, TEFL courses, Teaching English, Teaching Overseas plus more!
I don't think there's any doubt that this is the number one resource. I had more help from this site than I did from my sponsor agency. The One World 365 site is a must see too. Thousands of work opportunities from all over the world.
The site is also available in the following languages.
Danish, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Norweigan.
The forum attracts users from all over the world and as you have to be able to speak some English to work at camp, it can also be a great practice ground to hone those language skills.
The administrator of the site, has a superb forum signature...
"The world is a book and those that do not travel read only a page"
This is so true. After browsing this site, you will get the itch.
You can follow the site and it's many partners on both facebook and twitter.
We hope to see you soon.
