Teenchat was established several years ago now and since its inception it has become a very popular place for teenagers to go and chat to, well, other teenagers.

The site itself is very basic with few graphics and no other content other than the chat applet but this does not matter as the actual chat program used is on the whole generally very good, and after all, you visit this site to chat, not look at pretty pictures which take ages to download!

There are three different ways to use the site depending on your preference:

1. HTML (hyper-text-markup-language) version: This is the most basic and is pretty bad because it has to refresh the page every few seconds to get the most recent chat. I wouldn't reccomend using this but it is the most reliable because it generally doesn't "break" and crash/disconnect like the other versions detailed below.

2. Java light - this is a cut down version of the third option. Java is a programming language used primarily on the internet and is very good for things like chat, such as this site. This version tends to be more stable than the third option (Java too, but more complex) and has less options but has more options than the first choice. This is generally the best choice for most users.

3. Java full - this is very good when it works properly, often you have trouble logging on with this mode but when it does work it has more options than the others and is very quick.

When logging on you choose a username (which most people don't tend to change much, when they find a name they like, they generally stick to it, lots of people use this regularly and they know other people online by their names) and then choose from a selection of "rooms" to chat in. These vary from general chit chat to rooms for flirting etc and you can create your own. You can chat privately with other users and send pictures too, to show emotion which is a nice touch. <

My advice to people who haven't used this sort of service before is to be cautious who you give personal details to over the net. Many people give out their mobile numbers etc to people and five minutes later they're receiving dodgy calls from weird people, well, what do you expect eh!? Peak time is generally after six what with the ages of the people using it and before twelve at night although it has people on at all hours.

There's a great choice of options on this site, lots of users at all times and it's reliable and fun. Particularly good for UK teenagers, but others use it too. If you like this, try yahoo chat too! Have fun!
