Advantages: Fun and topical surveys on films with gift voucher or Paypal payments.
Disadvantages: Lack of surveys. Site design looks like it is mainly for teenagers.
~~ UPDATED JANUARY 2008 ~~
If you're as keen on giving your opinion as I am, then this online survey company could well be right up your street. That's-What-I-Think are after your opinions on the entertainment industry. They send out surveys asking you what you think of the latest or upcoming TV, radio, film and music releases.
There are no boring surveys on dog food, toilet paper or moisturiser here. There are no tedious questions asking how likely you are to purchase Product X when it hits the shops. There are no commentaries required on alternative packaging designs for Product Y. And there are definitely no interminable questions on perceived value for money on Product Z.
~~~ WEBSITE ~~~
Interested? Their website address is www.thatswhatithink.co.uk, but please don't be put off by their home page - it does come across as a little bit "Smash Hits", or geared towards a teenage market. There are lots of images of guitars, speakers, TVs and headphones scattered throughout the site. It is fairly sparse information wise, but it's easy enough to navigate and follow. The website has a white background with grey and red highlights:
~ Home - what they are aiming to achieve
~ How it works - what's in it for you
~ FAQ - very sparse but you get more detail once registered
~ Register - online form
~ Opinion Points - log in point for current members
~~~ REGISTRATION ~~~
If you want to join up then the registration process is very, very simple. It's an online form asking the usual questions about yourself - name, age, email address, education and occupation. They ask you to choose a username (this can be your email address). They ask a further series of questions on your TV region, the type of music you like, how often you go to the cinema, and your favourite types of movie genre. They give you 500 Opinion Points just for joining, which puts you 33% of the way towards qualification for your first reward. Once registered you can log into your personal account:
~ Look up your total points
~ Refer a friend program (their spelling - not mine....)
~ Prize Catalog (ditto...)
~ Complete program rules
~ How to earn and redeem points
~ FAQ
~~~REWARDS~~~
So how do they reward you? Payment is made in Opinion Points which are redeemable for Firebox gift certificates (at www.firebox.co.uk), or you can donate money to Unicef. There is also an option to get paid via Paypal - 1,500 points gives you a £5.00 payment.
Every Opinion Point earnt is the equivalent of 3p and all the surveys I've received have paid at least 400 Opinion Points (£1.20).
1,500 Opinion Points = £5 Firebox gift voucher, £5 Unicef donation or £5 payment via PayPal
2,500 Opinion Points = £10 Firebox gift voucher
4,000 Opinion Points = £20 Firebox gift voucher
Once you reach a minimum of 1,500 points you can order your gift voucher online on the That's-What-I-Think website or you can request a PayPal payment. They have been threatening to extend their range of gift vouchers on offer for the past three years, but nothing has changed so far. Many a survey has finished by asking me for my suggestions on the sort of gift vouchers they should be offering, but nothing has changed. Perhaps my suggestion of Marks & Spencer gift vouchers went down like a lead balloon at That's-What-I-Think towers......Afterall M&S is probably just not hip and trendy enough for them....members might spend their earnings on cardigans and slippers...heaven forbid...
~~~SURVEYS~~~
Survey invites come by email and invite you to click on the link to complete the survey. There is no access to the survey via their website. The email tells you the number of Opinion Points you will earn, and the topic of the survey. All the emails I have received have stressed the urgency of completing the survey as soon as possible - some offering 100 bonus/early participation Opinion Points for a quick reply. Some will tell you that the survey is only open for the first 400 respondents, so it does pay to react quickly. I can't say how fast they fill up as I have managed to qualify every time so far.
The surveys themselves are quick and easy to follow, and without exception, have all asked my opinion on films. Anyone who is familiar with the OTX film surveys will notice similarities in the layout of the surveys and their questions. Basically, they ask for your option on the latest cinema releases, your knowledge of the latest blockbusters, and which ones you are planning on seeing at the cinema. They'ree simple and easy to complete - just clicking the relevant boxes with your answers. They're quite fun and informative as you get to find out what's on at the cinema, or just about to be released. Upon completion of the survey, That's-What-I-Think credit the points to your account immediately.
~~~REFERRAL PROGRAMME~~~
Another bonus of this site is that you can make up to five referrals and earn from it. If you invite someone to join, then you receive a bonus of 20% of the Opinion Points that they earn during the next 12 months. The referee is sent an invite email from That's-What-I-Think telling them that you have suggested they join up. I can vouch that it works - I received 100 Opinion Points for one very quick referral I made earlier this year. However, please note that referrals are strictly limited to 5 per member.
~~~PRIVACY~~~
They guarantee that all the information you give them is held confidentially and is never sold to third parties. I have never received any spam from them at all - only survey invites.
~~~RECOMMENDATION~~~
I joined them nearly three years ago, and I've earned about £60 in gift vouchers during that period. I'll be honest, they don't offer me a huge amount of work, but what they do offer is well paid and easy to undertake. I never hesitate to respond to one of their survey invites, as I never get screened out and they're quite fun to do.
So, if you're bored with product surveys then I do recommend joining That's-What-I-Think. The surveys are easy, fun, and really quite entertaining. Yes, there is the usual gripe about the lack of survey opportunities, but that's normal for most online survey work - it's great, if and when you can get it. If you're patient, you'll earn enough to buy a something from the Firebox website every now and then, but you'll never make a fortune fast. Joining up does give you a very generous 500 Opinion Points, and if you've got five friends that want to join as well, then you'll find yourself well on the way to claiming your first reward.
