Advantages: Up to date IT news

Disadvantages: Nothing but IT news

I don't remember how I first happened upon the website of The Register (The hand that bites IT) but I have been a visitor ever since, frequenting the site daily, although I usually go at around 6pm as the site's last update is around that time, so you get all the day's IT news on one day.

The articles are generally well written, with an often sarcastic undertone, and some of the stories over tha last few months have been genuinely enlightening. For example, it might surprise many people, but before Windows went stupid, Bill Gates was actually a very accomplished programmer.

No sphere of Information technology is left out either, whether it's software, hardware, internet, website domain names etc. Such is the site's style and reporting, that for some time it was blocked by one of these web filtering programs. Why? Because it dared to write a story (and include a link to) a website that shows how to circumvent the said filtering software.

Another of The Register's particular favourite axes to grind is the subject of domain name ownership, and how the big multi-nationals have been stamping upon the little guys. The best story of recent months was when Time Warner threatened to take a fifteen year old girl to court because she had a web domain with the name Harry Potter in it. The said girl was a fan of the character and created a site dedicated to her 'hobby', didn't make any money from it or carry copyrighted material, yet Warner insisted on trying to stamp on her. After the story appeared on The Register, her site gained lot's of support, thousands of e-mails hit Warner complaining of their attitude, and Warner withdrew their threat.

So if you are interested in what the latest virus scare is, what the latest loophole in Windows is, and how many dot coms have collapsed this week then this site carryies the lot and frequently well before it's rivals.

The site also carries episodes
of BOTW (The B*stard Operator From Hell) a fictional character who works in Tech Support. Some of the stories are really funny and quite apt probably.
