Advantages: Good list of train times and routes

Disadvantages: Can be actually more expensive than at the station

thetrainline.com is my first stop for train tickets.

Their layout can take a little getting used to and can be difficult to navigate but once you get used to how it works then it can be very quick. I use this website mainly to book advance tickets, as it actually costs more when you include the fee for paying by card than it would at the train station! (e.g an off - peak return from Leicester to York ). I do find it helpful in that I can check the prices of tickets without having to actually goto the station and if they are then cheaper there then I can just pick them up on the day of travel. One thing I have noticed as well is that it is always worth checking the train providers website direct as tickets can sometimes be cheaper direct from them as there is no middle-man involved meaning you get their best deal direct.

I also find thetrainline.com useful for looking up the best train times, I know that other websites can do this but as I am used to it then I might as well use something that I am familiar with. Thetrainline.com also gives details of the route that you are taking and at what times you need to change if you have any in your journey.

Although I haven't had any experience of this I would imagine that being able to get the tickets the same day or next day at short notice would be very desirable for businesses who have last-minute meetings or conferences to attend, although this service is very expensive with same day delivery costing around £7.

Overall I find this site more useful to preview the journey that I will make rather than to actually purchase tickets from. But the times I have used it I have not had any problems whatsoever and as such would not hesitate to use them if my preferential methods were not available.

i notice that recently they've got rid of loads of their cheap advance tickets. Wasn't it less than a year ago that they justified making all journeys more expensive by saying there would be MORE cheap advance tickets. Buggers.
