Advantages: Free, very useful
Disadvantages: Literal Translation can be dodgy
I use Google translate sometimes, it is very useful to help me find words or sentences for French classes but is also wonderful at translating entire pages of a website, all you do is type in the url of the page you wish to translate and the language you want to translate from and to.
The application is not over complicated and covers literally over 50 languages, its easy to find on the google home page by clicking the 'more' button and then translate.
It allows you to type in a search word and it will search google directories in that particular country too under the search context in that language. This can be useful when looking for cheaper hotels etc that may be popular in a country but not searchable through lastminute.com or similar sites.
The translation tool is not huge but is hugely useful, reading newspapers in specific languages through translator has helped me understand more about the French culture and its particular idioms and see beyond what I understand of news from my own particular British viewpoint.
I would recommend this to anyone, both as a tool to writing and reading in another language or simply as a tool to allow you to translate a sentence you don't understand.
Its free, easily accessible, and simple, while there are glitches with language translation as its literal and some languages literal translation sounds funny in English it is a vital tool to those of us interested in this kind of thing.
Summary: Damned good free translation tool for the web

- 20/09/09 I bet that's what the foreign people on dooyoo use when they auto-translate, it really doesn't work for writing a review!!! |
