Advantages: better exchange rate
Disadvantages: need to book ahead
Travelex is a money exchange company that has bureaux de change in most airports and ports in the UK, and in many city centres.
Like most companies nowadays, they also have a website to advertise their services. What I didn't realise until recently though, is that they also allow you to book foreign currency from their website.
Many currency exchange sites will allow you do that, and get the cash posted to you at home or at work. Travelex doesn't offer delivery, but does allow you to pre-book currency to be collected from the airport from which you are travelling.
The advantage to the customer is that you get a better deal. Today's walk-up rate is 1.13 Euro to the £: by booking first online, I could get 1.23 Euro. So my £300 gets me an extra 30 euro - not bad for a planning ahead. [you can also get 0.5% back via Quidco, though not guaranteed of course.]
The site will also allow you buy pre-loaded cash cards, though I've used these so can't really comment.
You need to book 48 hours in advance, so no good for the last minute traveller!
Summary: Money saver for the organized traveller
