Beware 'one-stop' in Flight Bookings
Author Name: Jim Cameron
Advantages: Travel, accommodation, car all done at once
Disadvantages: Misleading advertising of flight
Booked flights, accomodation and car via Travel republic website. Flights we booked were Edinburgh to Orlando - site said 'Edinburgh Orlando via Gatwick, one-stop' there and back. We duly booked on this basis - BA from Edin to Gatwick, US Airways Gatwick to Orlando, so one stop in Gatwick we thought. All bought and paid for, our e-ticket still said the same. A few weeks later we happend to be talking to an air traffic controller who said US Airways did not fly direct to Orlando from Gatwick but went via Charlotte NC. Checked on line and this is true - Gatwick to Charlotte, change plane, 2h stop-over, then Charlotte-Orlando. Return was Orlando-Philadelphia (plane change)-Manchester-Edinburgh (still badged as one stop). We had chosen flights specifically because they seemed to be direct from UK to Orlando (our belief was the one-stop was the internal UK bit) and had paid £600 more than we needed to, based on rejecting those flights listing the stopover in the US. When I queried the 'one-stop' with TR, they first said this was merely a re-fuellling stop, which it is was not - it required a plane change. It turns out that US Airways uses the same flight no for multiple flights so our two flights on two different planes had the same number. We complained to TR who eventually got back, just within the allotted time to acknowledge the misleading nature of the information - they offered a small sum in compensation or a full refund of fligths and the chance to re-book, but by this time we were too late to get anything at a reasonable cost. The customer relations interaction was very slow and unresponsive - fair enough they did get back within the timescale BUT after I rejected their initial offer they were very slow to respond and I had to phone as emails were apparently ignored.
So beware flight details on TR website - double check exactly what the itinerary is yourself before committing your money. If we had not happened to know an Air Traffic controller we would have only found out on the day we travelled that we had bought a mis-advertised flight package
Summary: Efficient and workable if there are no problems, but not so good at responding to issues
