It is Kevin Spacey, the actor, who masterminded TriggerStreet.com to help young talent get a bit of the limelight that they truly deserve. TriggerStreet.com is a forum for those true lovers of cinema who write screenplays and shoot films rather than sit on their hands and grow “pale and wan”. It is a forum for them to share and critique screeplays and short films, to mix, train, support and compete with one another. An effective system1 has been devised to separate the husk from the grain. The critics, for that matter, are divided into four categories: New User, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. All New Users can only review assignments they get via Request Assignment Generator at a maximum rate of 1 screenplay and 3 short films per day; they can upload short films and screenplays of their own, too. The level of excitement goes hand-in-hand with required activity level as you qualify from one category to another. As a New-User-grade critic, all you were originally expected to do was to familiarize yourself with a screenplay in some way or other, then write a short review. From now on, you’ll have to pass a Review Eligibility Test “with a score of at least 70 % for [your] review to factor in the rankings or for [you] to receive credit for successfully completing it.” Other changes to the rules of the game are reportedly in process. Any qualms? – I believe it’s only fair! I would like to point out that in terms of user-friendliness the site is second to none in my five-year-long web experience. The designers of the site (and FAQ section in particular) took care of every possible problem or want a lay PC user like me may come across if he or she chooses to participate. If you need a free software to read a screenplay or watch a movie, or a piece of advice on how to upload both, you will easily get it all with the help of the links in the FAQ section. Thanks to the site’
s creators, I familiarized myself with such useful (or indispensable) tools and sources as AcrobatReader, RealPlayer, FinalDraft, www.indiewire.com, www.screenwriters.com, to name but a few. Oddly enough, I learned about the site from an ad in my e-mail box at yahoo.com – the site I’d rate second in terms of user-friendliness. Not a word was written, just a photo of someone called Lester Burnham. And what other guiding star does an American Beauty fan like me need to… left click? * * * TriggerStreet.com sponsors a Short Film Festival (SFF) with 10 finalists culled the top-rated films on the site. The 2003 TriggerStreet.com On-Line Short Film Festival Series will reportedly consist of three contests. Nine winners (three from each) will move on to a final competition to determine the champion. Such celebrities as Bono, Mike Myers, Annette Benning, Cameron Crowe and Danny DeVito will judge their creative endeavours. The kickoff edition of the inaugural Short Film Festival comes offline as a part of the 2nd Annual Tribecca Film Festival (Lower Manhattan, NYC). The winners will be announced on 9 May 2003… …Their motto is “WE WANT YOUR SCREENPLAY OR FILM!” – and I trust them. They say they never expected they’d get a feedback of such proportions in terms of both quality and quantity from across the globe that they now enjoy. ____________________________ 1 - Based on a thing popularly known as “Bayesean estimation”. What the hell is this? – I don’t know. Ask the TriggerStreet boys.
