Advantages: Unbiased and very helpful site
Disadvantages: None so far
Before i go away on any holiday or short break i always use trip advisor for a large part of my research.
They say the best form of advertising is word of mouth and this site proves that fact. They rate hotels and destinations based on public opinion.
You can read other peoples' reviews without signing up but if you have any queries or want to write your own reviews or contribute to the site you simply sign up with a username and password.
Once you have done this if you want to ask someone who has written a review about it you can send them a personal message. I recently got back from Egypt where i stayed at a hotel with a confusing all inclusive system and when i returned i wrote a review and a lot of people have come back with comments and queries for me to answer.
When i have needed extra information i have always found everyone really helpful - it's full of like minded people who basically all want a good experience and it's not just a site full of people complaining it has a variety of both good and bad experiences enabling you to get the best picture of where you are travelling.
You can also upload photos onto the site if you want to back up your review.
Not only do they review holdiays, flights and hotels but also restaurants and bars etc all over.
It's a great place to check even if you have already booked your holiday or trip as it has some fantastic travel guides too.
Summary: Make sure you get the best experience by checking trip advisor before you book anywhere
