Advantages: Free, get quite a bit of space

Disadvantages: Banner adverts. Site a bit tricky to get around.

With no prior knowledge of the ins and outs of HTML, it was with some trepidation that I set about constructing my own website. Tripod makes the process much smoother; uploading is incredibly easy. I started by using their templates, which were very useful as a starting point and gave me the confidence to use FrontPage Express and Dreamweaver to have a go at making my own.

I am still in the process of learning, and when I get the time, I hope to update my website and finish it off, because it is currently not all that impressive. The only thing I don't like and this is true of many free website providers, are the banners which pop up. The best thing about Tripod is that they only allegedly pop up once and are nowhere near as annoying as the GeoCities ones.

The other difficulty I sometimes have is navigating my way to the section of the Tripod page which allows you to edit your pages. I feel it is not clear enough. If it's your first attempt at a webpage, you could do a hell of a lot worse than sign up for a Tripod page.

I agree that tripod offers a good service for beginers. If you want to create your own homepage in a few fast easy steps, then this is the place to go.

I agree, those pop-ups are annoying, and I try to avoid visiting Tripod URLs, but people could do a lot worse. It's good enough to learn the basics there, then move on with their own domain; if it's a more professional image they want.
