Advantages: An Easily Useable Open Channel For Communication
Disadvantages: A Bit Frivolous
Twitter.com is a kind of open channel web site where you can publish to anyone who wants to look at a description of what you are doing or thinking at a particular moment in time.
It's a sort of open to the public personal diary.
It is very easy to get your own twitter account and once you have you are free to type anything into it that you want and others are also free to type responses and comments.
I feel that its only worthwhile uses in my opinion would be for business, travel or organisational uses. e.g. If you are making a trip somewhere for your company and want to keep them updated as to where you are at a given point in time or maybe how a business meeting is going or even ask them for some information or advice, then having this sort of open channel of communication might be of use. But so is text messaging.
However, any one else on the net can also view the "conversation".
It seems that most people are using it for general inane chit chat because they are bored and want an outlet to communicate with their friends or associates.
It gained a great deal of publicity a few weeks ago when the famous Stephen Fry was stuck in a lift and gave a running commentary to his twitter followers as to what was happening.
Perhaps this example gives an indication of its real level of usefulness.
Summary: It's Not For Me At This Point
