Advantages: Easy to use, instant updates from your friends

Disadvantages: Limited power features

I knew about Twitter from when it first came onto the internet, but was so busy with other things I just did not see the point. I was busy blogging, doing my own website and thought it was a waste of time.

The idea behind twitter is like a mini-blog, or communications tool. You have a thought, or something interesting happens and you put out a one line comment. All of your contacts who 'follow' you get to see your updates. So, you can probably see how useful this could be. Imagine you have a select group of people in your followers list... you decide to hold a get together. Instead of sending out individual emails you just Tweet about it. They all get to see the update and can respond if they want.

A lot of companies use the service too. So you could follow them and see what is happening with a particular company, pop start, news channel, you get the idea. Special events often set up feeds to, so if you are attending an event, like a concert or an exhibition, you can get live updates on what is happening.

So, after about a year of avoiding Twitter, I use it almost every day. It really is useful if used in the correct way... as a snapshot of what is going on, with who, what or where matters to you.

Summary: A good snapshot of what is going on

I had wondered what this was all about.
