Advantages: Raising Awareness of projects in Arica., Combatting poverty and hunger., Giving people a chance for life.

Disadvantages: None

Just think for a minute of all the food you've eaten in the last 24 hours. This is my list:

Cereal with milk.
6 cups of coffee and milk and sugar.
3 glasses of fresh orange, 5 of water and 1 of coke.
Roast Beef, yorkshire puddings, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, potatoes.
Hot chocolate fudge cake with ice-cream.
2 bars of chocolate.
Beans on toast.

A fair bit you may say - enough to stop me from going hungry or malnourished.

Did you know that the average person needs between 2,000 and 2,500 calories a day? Thenk consider this - there are millions of people in Southern Africa daily having to scrape by on 200 calories or less EVERY day.

24,000 people die from hunger every 24 hours. If you've been to see Lord of the Rings at the cinema with a running time of 3 hours, 3,000 people would have died from hunger while you were munching your popcorn.

Thought-provoking isn't it?

World Vision is a Christian charity committed to feeding some 1.9 million people currently at risk of starvation in Southern Africa. More than 100 projects have been set up in areas that have been worst affected by food shortages such as Malawi, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Angola. World Vision are also building new systems for watering crops and educating local people on new harvesting methods to dramatically improve future food production.

Hunger is a serious problem that is affecting more people than it ever should. But there is something that can be done about it.

Over the weekend of February 21st 2003, my youth group is going without food for 24 hours to raise awareness of this situation. We are joining in with World Vision's annual 24 hour famine and are hoping to raise over £1,000.

Visit the World Vision web-site to see the projects on offer. Sign up to give a donation and use your right to gift-aid any money you hand over so that the tax can be claimed back. There is also t
he option to sponsor a child and help give someone on the other side of the world a start in life.

Hunger and poverty are frightening, horrible things - I have written on this subject before with a visit to projects in Kenya - but together we CAN make a difference.

We CAN do something about it.

Excellent stuff. Really brings it home when you can compare the famine with something as simple as watching a film. It's so very saddening.

I have also done the 24 hour famine - it was a very popular event to get involved in in college. It is also perfectly safe to do (barring the very young, pregnant and sick of course) as long as you make sure to drink plenty of fluids and avoid activities such as driving when you are well into the fast.
