Advantages: Established service, good results, great portal

Disadvantages: Boring and irritating interface

Though Yahoo! is a very popular search engine, infact even synonymous with the very defintion of the word, I'm afraid to say that Yahoo!'s usage as a search engine is somewhat drained. It's only popular as I assume it was one of the first, and one of the first that many people came across thanks to product placement (i.e. Microsoft Internet Explorer's search facility).
However you can still get a good search from it and find a host of relevant and other interesting links based on your query, but the interface and result returning style is just offputting compared to, pretty much, all the other big search engines.
Though, Yahoo!'s killer magic trick is it's guise as a portal more than just a search engine with it's huge arrange of community and interactive features for the user. Not only are they great and useful, but there's lots of them (news, chatting etc.), and they are very very popular and attractive, and offer things that other portals don't. Even the MSN portal doesn't touch this. It's a great portal, so I do recommend you try all other services, but as search engines go, this is just a popular choice, but not a great one such as ones by AltaVista and the like.

Summary:
