Advantages: Good for non-search facilities
Disadvantages: Rubbish for searches
There seems to be two ways of thinking when it comes to Yahoo. Some people think it is really good and some think it is really bad. I must admit that I am in the 'think it is really bad' category now. But up until a year or so ago I did think it was really good. The problem seeems to be that what started off as a directory which only listed the very best sites has now turned into something much bigger. The introduction of free e-mail accounts, chat, auctions etc has had a seriusly detrimental effect on the search directory. It seems that the directory is now so neglected as to be almost useless. What used to make Yahoo so good was that each site submitted was reviewed by a human, not just listed regardless. This meant that 'under construction' sites and sites irrelevent to the category were excluded. I would be really interested to know how many human review staff Yahoo has now compared to a couple of years ago. I bet it is not as many - even though there are many more new websites now. As an internet resource in general Yahoo is great, but sadly as a search facility it is no longer of much use.

- 19/09/00 I agree, and also I find the search results format very unclear. Maybe I'm thick but using search engines is supposed to be a no-brainer!
Howe ver, I think the search database is different to the directory database so more rubbish tends to get into that. |
