Advantages: Good search function, news articles and free email
Disadvantages: None really
I think if a survey was taken to find the most popular homepage and search engine, google.com would win hands down. However, although I have nothing against Google, my favourite search engine is Yahoo, and it has been my homepage for many years now.
Www.yahoo.com, and http://uk.yahoo.com/, the UK only version of Yahoo, both look and behave very similarly. The page has a search box at the top, which allows you to enter search terms, such as 'Cafés in Nottingham' or 'Britney Spears tickets'. You can choose to search either in any of the following categories: websites, images, videos, local listings or shopping. You can switch between categories with a simple click of a button.
I find the search function to be very accurate and it almost always finds exactly what I am looking for. The search results page will show the ten most fitting results, with the name of the website found and a brief description underneath. You can then click through many further pages of results if what you are looking for does not come up on the first page.
Yahoo also has a search predicting function. This means that if you start to type something, a box underneath the search bar will open up and give you options. For example, if you start to type 'cinema l', a box will open saying 'cinema listings/cinema London/cinema Leeds/Odeon cinema Leeds' etc. You can then pick the search terms you want. This saves time and helps you to figure out what you are looking for.
The home page for Yahoo has more than just a search function. It also has an extensive searchable news section, and the four most recent or popular stories appear at the top centre of the page underneath the search bar. I find this really useful as it keeps me up to date with what is going on in the world without having to visit specific news sites.
On the right hand side of the page there is also a direct link to your emails, if you happen to have a Yahoo email account. If you don't, you can easily sign up for a free one. I find Yahoo mail very reliable, and would happily recommend it.
As well as email, Yahoo also has a large number of groups that you can join. These groups vary and include all sorts of different ones, such as fan groups for TV programmes, or Freecycle groups.
I think Yahoo is a multifunctional site that makes my life a bit easier. I wouldn't consider changing my homepage to anything else.
Summary: Helpful homepage and search engine
