Advantages: free, lots of information

Disadvantages: none really

Whats the first thing a girl does after a boy asks her to marry him? A quick survey of my friends revealed that, after saying yes and texting/calling as many people as possible, it appears to be to buy a wedding magazine to start drooling over a whole new world that you are now a member of.

I was no exception and at my local supermarket I parted with nearly £5 for a copy of 'You and Your Wedding'. I was bitterly disappointed; most of it was adverts and I felt like I'd paid for a catalog. However, it did point me in the direction of the 'You and your wedding' website, which quickly became my best friend in wedding planning.

The you and you wedding (YAYW) website is entirely free (first plus point) and is packed with useful information (second big plus point). It has a library of formal articles to help you with your wedding planning, all full of tips. However, possibly even more useful is the 'chat' section in which brides to be share their own experiences and give helpful advice, hints and pointers and also give warnings about companies to avoid. This is absolutely up to date and cutting edge in a way that review sites such as this and even weekly magazines can't be. This section can also be a source of emotional support as planning a wedding can in some ways be an isolating experience and other website users are better placed than most to provide comfort in this area. There are of course as with all websites occasional 'trolls' (users who set out to cause arguments and upset others) but in general it is a friendly forum.

The site also gives you the chance to create your own 'blog' of your wedding planning experience if you are that way inclined, and runs regular free to enter competitions to win things for your wedding. There are also free planning tools, such as a budget planner, which are useful.

Overall this was the best source of information I found when planning my wedding and I particularly found the chat forum useful. I would definitely recommend it to future brides to be, but with the warning to engage in the chat section without revealing too much information that could identify you personally to both avoid your friends potentially finding out the surprises you have in store before your wedding and also to enable you to keep 'real life' and all the random people you engage with on the web just that little bit separate.

Summary: Probably the definitive website for brides to be.
