Advantages: Find the stuff that isn't anywhere else, upload and watch original videos

Disadvantages: Watch that bandwidth bill! A lot of rubbish to sort through.

Sometimes a girl listens too much to her 70s and 80s radio station and has the sudden urge to go and watch a music video which no channel has aired in at least two decades. Thanks to the wonder of the internet, this no longer needs to be a problem - this is why we have youtube! And somehow whether I'm searching for the Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays" or Malvina Reynolds' "Little Boxes" (points for anyone who remembers either of those two. EXTRA points if you're now humming them) someone on youtube has already found them and uploaded them.

My other main way of using youtube is to search out and share adverts that have grabbed my attention on TV. I realise this makes me a sad little bunny, but come on now, some of these adverts are works of genius! They NEED to be shared!

Of course, that's not the only purpose of youtube. There's a great deal of good original video on there. I confess I tend to rely on links being passed to me rather than hunting such things out myself, but Charlie The Unicorn kept me in giggles for weeks after a friend passed it on to me, and Potter Pals similarly amused.

You can also upload your own videos with a few easy clips. I'm not personally artistic enough to have used this tool for anything other than videos of the cats being cute (sometimes I must SHARE the cuteness or explode) there are people who have done so, and have even become quite famous for it if they were any good.

That said, there's no doubt there's a lot of rubbish to weed out before you find the gems. Lucky me, I don't have to. I just find my music videos and rely on friends to find the good stuff. But SOMEONE out there has to be watching an awful lot of rubbish in order to find that one great video.

It's free to register, and free to watch and upload videos. Be careful though - watch too many and you may find your ISP will charge you for using too much bandwidth!
