Advantages: good selection of videos

Disadvantages: videos sometimes slow to load

Created by three paypal employees (there's one for the fact fans), youtube is a video sharing website now owned by Google. The company bases itself in California, and uses Abode to show a variety of clips: honestly, the selection is so vast you could spend years on here and will still not have watched all the videos. It's quite hideous how addictive it is: terrible for a procrastinator like me!!

Short history...

The idea for youtube was born in early 2005. Their headquarters were above a pizzeria and the first video entitled 'Me At The Zoo'. It can still be viewed on the site! The site has grown and is the dominant force in video sharing websites, their market share is 43%. The site receives over 1 billion visits a day.

Set up...

Go to Youtube.com and you'll be directed to the home page. At the top there is a large 'videos being watched now' section, as well as featured videos: a selection picked by the editors. These are supposedly the best videos uploaded that day/week...there are some real gems here, but often some not so great videos! If you know what you want though, there's a search bar at the top. This site really is easy to use, whether you just want something to kill the boredom or if you have a particular thing to find.

Videos...

There is a vast selection: music videos (though some are copyrighted now), films (though you have to watch these in 10 minute sections!), documentaries, footage of celebrities, silly videos, funny videos, people covering their favourite song. This last one is great: they can be funnily bad or absolutely great. I use youtube for a lot: discovering new music, watching films I don't want to buy (eg 'The Hottie And The Nottie'...don't *ever* watch this film). I also use it in work presentations as it is easy to embed videos in presentations. Very useful!
