      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Ironing is one of the household chores (sorry - I meant to say tasks) that does not come under my remit (thankfully.) When I left home to begin my first job, after leaving University in 1993, I did what any self-respecting person would do and bought myself an iron. This was necessary as I cleverly anticipated that the un-ironed student 'look' would not go down too well in my new place of work. Thinking back, I don't think I put much thought into my original choice, and probably opted for one of the cheaper models out of the Argos catalogue. However, the Philips Comfort 200 has done its job admirably over the past eight years. However, the ravages of time have finally left me with no option but to buy a replacement, as my first iron is not quite as efficient as it once was. After eight good years service, I have no complaints at all with Philips, and I was keen to buy another model that would be able to last the distance for as long as its predecessor, or perhaps even longer. I consulted the retail 'bible' once again (otherwise known as Argos to you), examining the choice of Philips irons that were on offer. I also had a brief glance at the other brands too, but did not see anything that appeared significantly better than the Philips models for the same price. The Philips models ranged in price from a very reasonable £16 up to a whopping £58. To my thinking £58 appeared to be a lot to pay for an iron - would it really be twice as good as one priced at just under £30? I thought not, and decided to opt for the slinky looking Philips Elance HI 418, which (so I'm reliably informed) is a breeze to use compared to the rather worse for wear Comfort 200. This model is the slightly newer equivalent of the now obsolete HI 414, as can be seen on Philips own web pages at www.philips.co.uk, hence the reason that this opinion has been written in this particular category. Usually priced at £31.95, it is c
urrently on offer, again at Argos for £26.95, which is a great saving of £5. It is better than some of the cheaper models on offer as it is more powerful at 1800 Watts rather than 1400. Although marginally heavier than some of the cheaper models its ergonomic design also means that it is easier to use as well. Five steam settings also mean that this aspect is much easier to control, giving better results on a greater range of fabrics. The fact that it is happy to be fed with tap water, is self-cleaning, has an extra long 2.4 metre cord, and heats up to the required temperature in just seventy seconds makes it all the more impressive. Although I have only had the need to use it briefly, as ironing is not one of my tasks in the house, I certainly noticed the difference. If it is able to withstand the tests of time in the same way that its forerunner did, then I believe this appliance was certainly money well spent. Although my reasons for purchase seem straightforward enough ie: yet another household appliance that has served its purpose and needs replacing, I have to admit to an ulterior motive. The fact that ironing is now less of a chore dramatically increases the likelihood of a work shirt being available on a Monday morning, as well as making the spare room appear tidier as the piles of ironing are neatly despatched to the wardrobe in double quick time. {An original Dooyoo opinion © Blackjane 2001} [PS: Before I receive any comments to the contrary, I am not a sexist pig, and do my fair share or work around the house including all the cooking and washing!]
